I have a Mustang IV that I am really enjoying although it way more amp then I will ever need. I often have my guitar teacher over and it would be great if he could connect to the amp also. It has plenty of power for our very low volume lessons. Is there some sort of splitter we could use to connect to same input?

Thanks for helping out a noob.

I can think of two possibilities but both require extra hardware:

the only second input I can think of would be to use the aux-in. Unfortunatelly this input requires some sort of preamplification AND will not add to the emulation itself as it is meant more than anything to connect a music backtracking input than anything else. You could ask you teacher to bring any kind of guitar pedal or small guitar multieffects and that would do the trick, connecting the second guitar to the pedal/preamp to the aux-in on the mustang

The other possibility, more interesting IMO, if you want both guitars to sound the same (as they would both go through the amp emluation) would be to get a cheap mixer, connect both guitars to it and from there to the mustang guitar input. I have had excellent results with the xenyx series from behringer, this is just an example that goes for about 20$

or this other and you will be well in your way of having a home studio (for about 40$)

You can also use something very simple, like an adapter cable, a "T", such as those used to attach two sets of 1/4 inch headphones to a player. You plug the two guitar cables into the two 1/4" female jacks, and the male plug into the amp. It won't stress anything as long as both guitars use normal passive pickups. It's not perfect, you will have to set the levels and tone of the two guitars for best balance, as they will interact. Simple trial and error. I've done this many times on other amps, no reason it shouldn't work on a Mustang. If either of the guitars uses a battery-powered active preamp, don't do it, you will have to use a little mixer.

May I suggest an A/B box? I use mine at times to feed to two amps (with an EQ/boost before the box, as big drop in relative output to each), but two guitars into one amp works also. may have to do balancing of the two as noted, but what the hey, it will work.
And the trick of using a Pandora with a 1/4 to 1/8 adaptor into aux in works well, especially if friend has acoustic electric and I am running a tele into regular input, as we often do.

Wow! I thought this was a great idea, especially the UB502 model. Of course I couldn't find those in stock so I bought the Xenyx 802 (more is better - right?). My ignorance has probably bit me in the butt and they are probably different items.

Well anytime I plug the amp in I get a tremendous amount of feedback. Doesn't seem to make a difference on the cable I use, where it is plugged in, or any or combination I try. I don't think the unit is defective because I can use it to mix in two different computer outputs and it works perfectly.

I'll probably just buy the MX400 unit... as i should have to begin with.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I had tried a similar thing using two computers into a "y" cable and then to my amplifier. One of the source units had a tremendous drop off in volume and I could never get them to balance out. In fear that I might get similar results from the guitars, I didn't even try it. A simple solution if it works. I'll try to find one.

Thanks to all for your suggestions and help!

Hi Bluespicker,

I use the Behringer mixers everyday in front of the mustang with excellent results, could you please explain how are you connecting the equipment (guitars and amp to the mixer) and what levels are you using on the mixer output?

I gave up on every combination I could think of last week. Today I connect the Guitar to LINE IN 1 and the Amp to MAIN OUT - L just as I had before and absolutely no feedback. In fact there is less hum going through the 802. I don't understand it but I am not gonna fight it.

Thank you for your guidance to this noob.

Yeah, those Xenyx 802's are quite the bargain for the extra $20 than the UB502's. More inputs and a FX loop built-in plus the tape in/out jacks.

They are also a good starter mixer for a home studio on the cheap.
