I've been using the Mustang V head for about a year now and I like the versatility.

Playing in a band that does tribute to all different forms of rock (from Pink Floyd-Metallica), I have 12 or so different presets that I use on a nightly basis. And I'm a "tone $@!&#." Basically, I can never make up my mind as to what I like, especially when it comes to distorted presets.

At this point - my favorites are the Super-Sonic and the 80's Metal w/overdrive for that "heaver" distortion. Usually keep my treble at around 7, mid at 4-5, bass at about 2-3 and gain around 5-6 depending on the preset. I'm satisfied with the tone by itself, but when mixed through a PA and with a band I find it to get a little buried.

So I'd like some feedback and your experiments. What you find works best for you.

Thanks for any and all input.

It's not exactly a suggestion, but this little article helped me a lot on reconfiguring my presets: http://audiominds.com/eq_tips.html

Cheers.

I used to be in a cover band like that, at the time I was using a Marshall JMP1 midi preamp with a 12 button foot controller (10 presets + bank up/bank down) - kind of a similar setup.

What usually worked out best for me:

1. Create the preset by playing along with the original recording and tweaking at home
2. Make adjustments at rehearsals (assuming you can use your own amp)
3. Make more adjustments at gigs - you can do it on the fly while performing, or try to remember what you need to do afterwards.

I wouldn't suggest tweaking your settings based upon any recordings you have of your gigs, unless you are lucky enough to have a really exceptional recording. It might take a few gigs before you're happy with the settings. Your audience probably won't notice.

middle ranges cut thru the mix. try using the overdrive for nothing but boosting the mids and a little volume.
