Hey gang. I just started playing again after 30 years, so I picked up a Squire and a Mustang 1. I was playing through a Roland cube for a couple of months, then bought the Mustang. Wow, am I impressed with this amp! I have been learning some songs by Social Distortion from their album "Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell". I have been trying to match my sound to the original, but haven't had much luck. I know Mike Ness pays thru a Bassman with a Les Paul, but there has to be a way to duplicate his sound thru the Mustang. I haven't downloaded the Fuse software yet as I don't really know what it entails to use it, and better yet, how to use it. I respect everyone that plays well, and I'm just trying to make noise that is enjoyable, and fun to play! In advance, Thank you to all who reply! Keep Rockin!

You really should install FUSE (and do a firmware update BTW). You won't get far just by modifying default presets on M1...
FUSE/community stuff/firmware update are main reasons I bought mustang in the first place. Plus it can sound sooo nice :D

Thank you for your reply denisk. I suppose it's time to download Fuse, do some homework, and learn how to use it. I'd rather spend my time playing, but since I want to get all fancy now, I'll look into it. Is the Fuse software idiot friendly? I'm not the greatest at mixing and adjusting sounds  Thanks again for your reply!

Hey there markizme.

denisk is spot-on in advising you to install FUSE and the firmware updates. You'll get much more out of a M-I than twiddling the knobs on the amp it's self including several additional amp models.

The official Fender FUSE user manual is only good for a very basic understanding of the amp controls in FUSE but you should give it a read as a start. Luckly, FFXIhealer has some more in-depth info that you can find in this thread.

Good luck and enjoy.

Hey there p90sdude. Mark is sufficient to call me by  . Thank you for your reply, and the link. I saved it in my bookmarks so that I can reference it. I was right, the fuse software isn't idiot proof. Much of it was greek to me, but I am sure after some time playing with it I will be able to navigate thru it. So, let me ask another question if I could. When using the Fuse software while playing, my laptop just needs to be plugged into my Mustang 1 via the usb cable? Sorry for being full of questions, but I have so many more of those than answers. Thanks again p90sdude. I can't tell you enough about how much of a help you guys are!

Yeah, that is pretty much it Mark - just connect the amp via USB to your computer and then start FUSE. Actually, you could probably connect the amp after starting FUSE but FUSE will be looking for the connection when it starts.

If you look in the lower left hand corner of the FUSE window as it starts up, you'll see messages about FUSE looking for the amp and connecting to it if it finds it.

Try this once you have the amp connected to FUSE: move the "Preset" selector knob on the amp - you well then see FUSE's display change show the amp and effect used on that preset.

Twiddling the knobs on the amp will change the respective knobs displayed in FUSE. However, twiddling the knobs in FUSE won't physically change the position of the knobs on the amp - the values will change but the knobs on the amp are't motorized.

When you move or change something on either the amp or in FUSE you'll notice that the SAVE button on the amp will light up and a SAVE button in FUSE will change color to indicate changes made to the preset. Unless you do save the changes, you can just change to another preset and nothing gets over written.

You can experiment all you want and so long as you don't do a SAVE there is no harm done. So, just relax, goof around and make changes and listen to what the various knobs, switches and FX do.

More questions? No problem, lots of knowledgeable people that will be happy to get you going.

Best advice I can give is, if you use the model for the actual amp you are trying to copy (Bassman in this case) and it doesn't sound right, try playing with the other models to see if you can get closer. Sometimes the model that doesn't make sense has the sound you're looking for.
