I've used Mustang Floor to FRFR or to amp's loop return with excellent results, but now I'm finding troubles trying to use it as a regular pedalboard.

When I try to connect guitar to Mustang and Mustang to amp's input, using it as a regular pedalboard (amp sims disabled), if I turn up the volume to make the signal equal as going guitar direct to amp, the hiss is terrible.

Looking at "pedalboard" presets (80 to 87), I find always the Studio Preamp selected. I've tried it (Studio preamp gain and volume at 10, noise gate engaged, eq flat) and it's better than with amp sim off, but still changes a lot the sound of guitar straight to amp.

Is this the only way to use the Mustang Floor as a pedalboard? It's useless without an amp sim engaged?

Hey,

The only way I have found to not have hiss is to lower the output volume of the floor I think. I never use it at more than 30%.

If you are connecting to a mixer/PA increase the input sensitivity for the Mfloor input, this will solve the issue.

If instead you are connecting the floor at the input of another amp things are more difficult but try this, in order of preference:
-increase the studio preamp volume (not gain) this should have minimal or no effect of the tone
-increase slightly the gain of the external amp, this could have a great boost effect and not change much the tone if you are in the lower gain levels
-increase the level of the effects in the floor chain. Some effects are know for having a poor volume response (like the wah for example) so try maxing out their level
-try putting a stomp pedal post studio preamp and increase the level (compressor or overdrive are favourites here)
-Instead of using the studio preamp use the twin emulation, it has more boost than the studio mixer and it should not change your tone dramatically, particularly if you go from the floor to another amp

hope this helps

PS: to the connoisseurs and traumatized: note I'm talking about the HISS, not the FIZZ, great difference there :)

Thanks for the advice, jedi! :D

As I said, there is no problem running it direct to PA. When using amp sims, there's no volume drop and no loss of tone. Problem arrives when trying to use it without amp sims. :?

About the other solutions:

- Studio preamp has gain and volume maximized, it's the only way to make it work, and still doesn't sound as guitar straight to amp. More trebly and bassy (and not in a good way).
- Increasing volume on external preamp helps. Not the same sound and still hiss, but better than before.
- I'd like to avoid fixing this issue with ods, compressor, or external pedals, that is something I'd like to add when my guitar and amp sound like they would, not before it. Anyway, I've tried and don't like it.
- Twin sim is the one gets more use when going direct or to amp's return, it's one of the greatest sims in Mustang. I've tried to use it for this application following your advice, but still prefer the Studio Preamp for it.

Summarizing, there's no way to make Mustang Floor work alone as a pedalboard strictly for effects without amp sims engaged. I'd like to be wrong about this, but it doesn't seem so... :(

I'm afraid I have no more tricks than those at this point... you can alway ask fender to increase the gain of the studio preamp with a firmware update.... but I would not hold my breath

Problem is not that studio preamp lacks gain or volume, problem is that it altered the sound. As expected, I suppose.

Thanks again for your help.
