Does anyone have a good preset for the Mustang III for the jingle-jangle sound of a Rickenbacker 12-string as played by Roger McGuinn of The Byrds?

I was a Byrds fanatic. Bought every album and wore em out. I actually joined their fan club in the 60's (only one I ever joined). I was a Dylan worshipper and the Byrds brought Dylan to the mainstream. They were amazing - never got to see them :( McGuinn was a master... Their harmonies were just beautiful.

Check out Mr. Tambourine Man at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06rGW0AQGiY. I'm looking for a Fender Mustang III amplifier preset that duplicates the compression that the Byrds used.

My understanding (perhaps wrong, happy to be corrected!) is that McGuinn's Rickenbacker had some sort of compression circuitry built into it. That probably created a different type of sound to external compressor effects, and will make it hard to prescribe any particular settings to match the original. Also, the 12 strings and Rickenbacker pickups were key to the Byrds' trademark sound.

I'd suggest starting with the Mustang 3's compressor effect, with all dials set to "12 o'clock" (ie 5.5 on the 1-to-10 scale), and just experiment from there.

Also, if you're using a 6-string, adding a bit of Chorus could help emulate the 12-string shimmer/jangle.

Note the Mustang has a "12-string" effect built-in. I don't know if that's intended to be a Byrds-like sound (haven't tried comparing it to any of their recordings myself), but looking at the settings within that might also give suggestions.

Further, the Byrds used Fender amps, eg "Super Reverb" so the "Twin Reverb" on the Mustang may be a good model. Although I've also read that for studio recordings, Roger plugged his guitar direct into the mixing desk, no amp at all. So the amp choice probably isn't so critical for the sound.

i just heard the youtube video. wow that is the thinest sound guitar ever.

I think the 12 string preset on fuse gets pretty close, maybe lower the bass to minimum, and take away some of the mids too, use neck pickup, and you should be pretty close to it.

Optionally try to lower amp emulation bias to minimum to make it sound more "wirey" and crispy

Thanks. I downloaded three presets, 12 string, 12 string clean, and 12 string twin comp b4 pitch. The last one comes closest to The Byrds. I also found one called 65 twin compression which I like even better.

I have almost zero experience with compressors, will give it a try later.
I normally prefer either the simple compressor effect or SAG = more if I have to use any compression.

BTW if you want to create you own 12 string preset, an idea would be to use the pitch shifter one or more octaves up, and experiment with the effect level until it sounds appropriate, some chorus sparkled over there and then you can try it out with several amp emulations. Normally 65 twin is too vanilla for my taste and I prefer bassman or deluxe, you can even try princeton with an apropriate noise gate as is noisier.
