A 100-watt speaker won't make a 15-watt amp any louder. If you want to be fairly sure an X2 will compete in a band setting, I'd recommend swapping out with an Eminence Ragin' Cajun 10" speaker. At 100db sensitivity, it will add quite a lot of volume over the relatively soft (low sensitivity) speaker. It's only around $70.

If you really want to be sure, get the MIII. It will stand up to anything volume-wise.

Do like me, get both! The X2 is a like a poor man's Deluxe Reverb Reissue: exceptional Fender Blackface tone with the luscious 6V6 tubes at their best. The Mustang III is exceptionally versatile, but never quite achieves the greatness of a true tube amp. But remember, the X2 is best at sounding like a DRRI, it has one great sound. The MIII has hundreds of great sounds, and super deep EFX and cab emulation, etc.

But if you're not into tweaking and building tones, just get the X2. It's an amazing amp for the money. But for a band, stick in the RC. Better sound, and gives you band-survivable volume.

But it also depends on what kind of music you play.

I auditioned both these amps. I recommend you do the same - only your ears will tell you which one has the better sound for you.

Personally, I prefer the Mustang sound - the Super Champ does its thing very well, but that single thing wasn't the right sound for me. Plus the Mustang gives me many different sounds to suit every mood.

There are some/many who say the Mustang doesn't have quite the warm/organic/whatever tone of real valves/tubes. Unless you need a very specific valve sound, or have the Mustang side-by-side with the corresponding real valve amp, I don't think you'll notice the difference or care once you have it. The Mustang's versatility is worth more, imvho, than that last 1% of genuine valveness.

But, as above: listening to both and deciding which one sounds right to you, for your style of playing, is the only way really to answer the question.

Yeah, if you're just doing blues or roots and just need the one great tone the X2 could be awesome. But for wilder stuff or more varied cover material where you need to clone various sounds the stang kills.

The Mustang III does indeed sound great! Especially for the price. BTW, the new ones won't hit 'til March.

Some good advice here. Just try both. I did and got the Mustang III.

You really can't lose with either amp, however.

As a previous owner of a Mustang III and the current owner of two SCX2's (the combo and the head) I'll tell you this. The champ's build quality is much higher and despite some other comments to the contrary, it has many nice tones. If it's wattage you're after...

The MIII is 100 watts but I never really loved it, it's full of fun effects to play with but it's not tube, and hence, does not sounds like a tube amp, it's close but it just doesn't. The SCX2 has effects too... and handles pedals very well. The MIII is however plenty loud to jam on stage with. The SCX2 would likely need to be miked. But... cranking up the SCX2 on either channel yields real deal tube saturated overdrive bliss. Cranking the MIII leads to bleeding ear drums and digital mush if your not careful.

If you can't tell already... my $'s on the SCX2.

The superchamp x2 and the mustangs use the same sound engine. Except the scx2 has the clean channel. But the voice models on channel 2 are all mustang sounds. The main difference with the superchamp is the global effect and eq sections. With the mustang effects and eq are all stored as a patch. I have the scx2 head and cab and I like it alot. I recently got a mustang 1 and I think I like being able to save the patches better on the mustang. You can gig with a superchamp ( I've used it in high volume situations) just be ready to turn it up to 10. The pain is the global eq. It's tough to dial in good tones on both channels that will have identical eq positions. I find the mustang to be easier to adjust and tweak your patches on the fly. I plan on buying a mustang 3 or 4 for future live playing. Both great amps! Follow your ears etc!
Cheers
