Hi,

I am trying to find this sort of tone on the Mustang III - not so much the style and technique, also I don't think it is anything to do with any pedals.

This seems a very "wirey" type sound - like piano wire or something. A bit like lap\pedal steels - but very ringing "metallic" - even on just a single note, so it's not a case of "technique, son".

Good section is about 11.00 mins in, although any of the "to camera" pieces show it really well.

I have a partscaster tele, ash body, maple neck, 009 strings, trebly pickups (6.3k bridge AWG42), brass saddles - as close to original Blackguard as I can.

I have gone through all the Mustang III amp models, with assoc settings (speakers etc), but nothing comes close to this "wirey" basic tone.

The closest (still a long way off) is either the Deluxe 65 or Twin 65 clean amps with a the 4xMarshall, or at a pinch the 2x12C Celestion, speaker- but even that is just an EQ thing really.

Any help would be greatfully appreciated!

very interesting challenge. after listening now I see what you mean by wirey sound.

I suspect it has something to do with tweaking the tone control of the reverb effect but I need to try

I do not have a Telecaster to test, but doing some reasearch I have found this recording made with a 51 original telecaster (no-caster actually :) going through a clean tube amp with no effects and no reverb.

in the other hand here it is another video of ANOTHER telecaster through the SAME amp (the sportsman is a copy a Princeton I think), that does not sound AT ALL metallic

I'm starting to think the metallic sound you look for is the sound of SOME telecasters through any amp?

That said I will try later to get the metallic sound out of any guitar.

That first one, I can get close enough to on the MIII - to me that's the "proper" Fender twangy, bright clean (and crunch) of a Tele.

The second one however sounds to me more like the wirey/metallic one I can't get...(edit: at about 1:20 in)

okay, so I did a quick test. This should give you progressive "metallic" sound. At the end my strat sounded like a tin can :) so go down until you find the tone you are looking for:

-dial the basic princeton preset (might work with deluxe(s) too)
-on advanced amp settings do a SAG = less and bias = -50

-add a reverb (spring 63 or 65 should work) and on the reverb tone settings try TONE = 10

-add a ring modulator (yep, you read that right) and lower the effect level to around 2

Let me know how far was I with a Telecaster and we can adjust from there.

Wow-never thought of the Ring Modulator- that and the envelope thing are the ones I have never used, or thought likely to use.

It will take me a few days to try this out - need to wait for "air time" when everone else is out!

Thanks so far, can't wait to try- I will post back.

I played around with this a little last night and the RM has something going for it I think.

Also, I will have to look a lot closer at some of the reverb settings like Diffusion\Dwell that I haven't paid much attention to before.

Funnily, I used headphones last night and just that brought an immediate "presence" that wasn't there through the speaker...

...maybe I just haven't turned the volume up enough for it all to really work as a whole.

(Edit update: I haven't had time to get to grips with this yet - so thanks to the advice above - I have';t forgotten and will feed back at some point!)
