Using Rosegarden I have made several midi backing tracks (for my Mustangs I & III) and they generally sound VERY good on the computer via speakers or headset. They also sound GREAT on my stereo, but when I replay in the laptop and feed Headset-Out audio into the Mustang AUX port I get poor sound at best. Can't put my finger on it for lack of experience, it may be too shrieky and if I equalize beforehand for more base (using Audacity) then it comes out too distorted .....as if it were being pumped to a real cheap headset.

Is this the right way to do it (I guess it's the only one with a laptop)? There is no other out port on the laptop. What can I do to improve the sound quality? Can I expect far better results with a walkman or such (not that I want to go backwards in time)?

My wishlist for this port is actually a usb port for a usb stick and the ability to read the most common proprietary and ALL non-proprietary file formats such as flac, has a dedicated adjustable auto-volume AND a mini equalizer.

Any hints appreciated

The aux-in socket on the Mustangs feeds directly into the power amp - which is a reasonably bland SS amp. So in theory you should get ok sound quality.

However, the issue is that the amp overall is a GUITAR amp not a HI-FI amp. It therefore has a guitar amp speaker, with the limited and non-linear frequency response deliberately created for such speakers. The same applies to the cabinet.

So, you shouldn't expect FRFR hi-fi output from a signal fed into the aux socket. On the other hand, it shouldn't sound appalling.

yep, I totally agree.

From the M3 (and very possibly from the M4) you can expect AM radio kind of fidelity from the speaker (muddy bass and muddy highs). the aux-in is kind of best-effort, quick-solution for having some audio input but nothing more

In the other hand I have heard people using the Mustang 2 as a party speaker so probably their speaker is not a guitar speaker but more of a hi-fi kind.

Another possibility would be the GDEC-3 which comes with a tweeter because is more geared towards backing tracks and such.

humchucker, try playing a store-purchased music CD instead of a media file like an MP3. Does it sound any better?

I didn't know about the bent freq. response. Dammittt, that totally screws my plans!
Ok & thanks a lot, I'll try some workarounds like creative pre-equalization, I guess that's the only thing I can do and knowing what the cause is is half the solution.

.

I'm thinking of a little reverse-engineered equalization that suppresses some of the freqs that the speaker responds to best. What would be these frequencies, mostly from low E to the 24th fret on the 1st string?

Can I plug a MFX Pedal into the AUX In? How about an Eleven Rack?
