Hello all. As you see I'm new to this joint, but here's the deel. I just got the mustang 3 yesterday. I've played with it for about three hours so far, plus read a lot here and everywhere as to what it can and can't do. I've been useing a twin for forty plus years without any issues except the weight of it lately. Now the thing is that I know it won't sound like a twin but, here is what I am gonna do. I'm gonna take the mustang to a gig as my only amp on saturday night. I might be crazy but the playing is in the fingers, right? But anyhow I don't know the amp at all yet so we'll see. I play country rock and blues boogie music so it should be ok. Any thoughts or tips or have I just lost it? I'll re post after the adventure. Thanz and peace dave..... :D

All I can say is , thanks for giving it a go. I'm looking forward to hearing your impression of it.

When I bought my M3, I compared it directly against a twin. The twin sounded better, but I didn't feel it justified the difference in price (to me). I think the M3 gets the basic gist of the twin, but you're likely to have a much more informed opinion than I. Thank you, and I hope to hear your evaluation soon.

how did it go on Saturday, davebols?

I've had a few gigs with my Mustang III and was happy with the results.

I've giged with it twice now. As I said, I don't play any metel music so that cuts out most of the presets. Firs the basics caus even for someone like myself that has been playing out for almost fifty years this was a lot of tweeking. once I found the presets that wen't too high distort it took a little time to refine the basic-gain, volume, trble, mid, and bass controls. I set verb to my likes also.( I'll get more into presets next time) . Here's the important stuff. I had to hook up to fuse to really open this thing up. First thing was the amp has a lot of high end treble. I found in most presets that the amp mods had the bright swith on. this can only be turned off in fuse. The delay are mostly good but again to really clean them up you must be in fuse. If you change the stomps it is better in fuse too but, on the amp you can do adjustments rather quickly. The firs gig. The band I play with has a singer that plays mostly acoustic, Bass player, drummer, harmonica, and anouther guitar player that uses a 100 watt haed into a four twelve marshall cab. This little amp can keep up with all that at live levels. I pushed it pretty hard though. Master volume was set around 7. It sounded a little tight but i'm shure it was because the speaker is not broke in yet. it did sound a little better the second time out. Now as for that thing they call fizz. At lower levels I only heard it a bit but, when I cranked the amp up it was a fizzing bad. Here was an easy fix but it takes a little tweeking. You have to get to the sag, bias, gate, cab, pres, mstr controls. the gat had to be on max to really cut down the noise. The gate on high. Mostly just play aroun til it sounds better. Becaus I didn't hear too much fizz at lower levels these must be adjusted at playing volume. (good luck with the wifey) So mostly it has good possibilitys but it takes time. A good d.i. out would be good and a little better build i don't like plastic jacks. Ok i'm gonna take it out again next week and see what else it can do. hopefully it will just get better. I don't know if any of this helps but we'll have a go. thanx dave.

Curious if anyone has used these amps on top 40 cover gigs. I do a lot of cover gigs playing R&B, Pop, and 70's - today's music with 5-7 piece bands and much of my sound needs to be sparkly clean at louder volumes for rhythm chording. I've been using a hot rod deville 410 and with the volume at 5 the amp breaks up TOO MUCH for me. I desperately want a amp that will stay clean. Will a Mustang IV be the answer?????

Hi,

Any mustang will stay clean no matter how much you cranck the master volume, that is if the preset you choose is clean to start with (one of the beauties of a modelling amp, the other is obviously the opposite that you can stay crunchy at lower volumes if you want)

The mustang 3 can be really loud at 100Watts, or you can get the M4 a little more bulky but with two speakers and 150w possibly more appealing to you.
Or if you have already a cabinet, you may get the M5 (head)
Or if you have a band PA you carry around, you can buy the Mustang Floor (only 200$) who shares the same presets but without a power amp.

All these models will stay clean at top volume if you choose to.

Thanks Jedi2b for your response. Just would really like to find an amp I can use for both indoor and outdoor shows that will really stay clean. I will have to go down to GC and play some but the real test will be getting one of these to a gig and playing.

I've loaned out my MIII for some outdoor jams at my college, and you can push the volume without breaking up (usually fender twin, deluxe, or bassman models). Even holds it's own against a drum kit. MIII or MIV would definitely be worth a spin.

Hi davebols!
are you talking about the Mustang 3 vers. 1 or the new released vers. 2?

hi frondizi. I've got the v-1 mustang 3. I got it a few months before the new vesion came out, figures. I'm still getting more used to it every day. Other than the learning curve on it it sounds better than when I first got it. I can tell that it seems to be a little more loose and dynamic. Some one here said something about speaker breakin time. I don't know the science behind this but I do notice it I think.I'm still tweeking it quit a bit but gtting closer. I found that when trying to get (the sound) The saig/bias settings can do quit a lot. Also speaker sims can make or break a preset. One trick for useing this amp live is to do your adjustments at gigging levels (I run the master between 4and7) caus when you do turn it up every thing changes. I do most of the setting up with just the amp not in fuse but, there are certain changes that you must plug into fuse to set and it is a good way to save and compare your presets. I think that the bright switch can only be turned on or off when your plugged in to fuse, but I might be wrong thats just how I do it. Gotta go for now but I'll keep posting as I dicover more about this high learning curve of an amp. peace Oh one more thing. I haven't been to the shop to check out the v-2 yet but from what I've read here most of the difference is in hardware with just miner software upgrades. I'm sure someone here will have more to say about that though haha.

Hi Davebols, i have to ring back in 2 days one of my favourite instruments shop here in Italy, because they told me very soon the new vers.2 will arrive there.

Then i'll go to give a try to a Mustang 3 and i'll try to listen as much as possible not just the sounds but also the possible fizz problem but i hope the new version is noise-free as i think much customers hope so.
However usually that problem happened after days or even some week of playing. But the feature listed in the section Specs -> Unique features of new serie << new low-noise power amp platform >> is a good clue. We hope for the best.

In the past i was used to the distorsions and amp model simulations of the Roland pedalboards like Boss GT5 or VG88 (at the moment i have a Roland GR55) and i experienced the limitations of digital processing (digital aliasing) and i have to say that Roland digital models are much less accurate and pleasant than the Mustang / AmpliTube , but the fizz on some Mustang vers. 1 was a problem more noticeable.

As said in another topic, it was solved at 50% by latest firmware updates because in the clean tones the fizz was really gone but it remained starting from the crunch sounds up to more overdriven sounds. And that was the amp they gave me in replacement, not the first i bought.
i used much more the Overdrive effect in the stompbox section and just occasionally the Fuzz .. it was not so pleasant to me.. and for the fuzz i preferred the GR55 external simulation of Bigmuff fuzz.
