I used a cable adaptor like this

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index ... Id=2103835

It was plugged from xlr out to amp input via 1/4" plug. The hum went away when using headphones when the cable was plugged into the amp even when it was turned off.

Hope that helps

It's without a doubt a grounding issue if USB connection makes it go away.

Maybe the ground wire that goes to the power connector plug is internally disconnected due to a loose wire or something like that so the only way for your mustang floor to get grounded properly if through the USB jack via a computer.

EDIT, seems you got that already:

I'd try to get your unit repaired/replaced then, don't let this unfortunate event turn you away from Mustangs, they are really awesome.

this may be way off base, but worth a shot...
Make sure the output knob isn't cranked all the way full.
that is to say the psychical knob on the back of the unit
The floor has a good bit of output, and could be introducing noise just by virtue of being so loud.
I would make sure it is below 1/2 to start with.

I too am in the quest to get rid of the VERY LOUD MF Hum. I have tried the many suggestions in the other HUM posts. In my case, my "other" Multi Effects units are extremely quiet in my studio and swopping in the MF results in both HUM and Fizz. My best guess at this point is a bad ground on the power in jack or a bad power supply. I still need to try the following:

1. XLR OUT TO 1/4 in cable to Tech 21 power engine 60
2. Another location other than my studio like a friends home.

This is a great sounding tone machine and is simple to operate. It will most likely replace the other MFX units as my grab and go "gig rig", if I can silence it.

UPDATE
------------

I did manage to alleviate most of the Hum by doing the following : (using the same outlets in my studio)

1. Moved my SSS stratocaster plus away from my amplifier. Pickups are stock Fender Lace Golds.
2. I had an XLR (male end) to stereo phone plug cable and plugged the stereo plug end into the UNBALANCED L OUTPUT. The XLR was plugged into the Tech 21 Power Engine 60 XLR IN jack.
3. After powering the MF and PE60 on, I Stood 4 feet away from the PE60 and noticed a great amount of the Hum was gone. I then pivoted left to right and right to left until I could barely hear the Hum. Not 100 percent, but enough to be happy with the Mustang Floor.

My next step is to obtain a male and female ends XLR cable and go from the Mustang Floor XLR OUT to the PE60 XLR IN. I believe this with solve the problem.

Hope this is able to help the other forum members with this situation. :-)

This is not going to give good results. You'll have a 'floating' pin (either the ring or the sleeve of the TRS stereo jack plug, depending exactly where the contacts are inside the mono socket) and how the cable is wired up (there are more than one type of XLR-to-TRS cables). This could lead to a variety of hum, fizz, buss, distortion, interference, etc.

Agree. You can't really do a valid test until you're using the right interconnectivity. Good luck with it.

Scott,

Thankyou for your supportive post. I am going to borrow the XLR male and female ended cable this evening. I want this to solve my noise problem as I really think the MF is a great sounding piece of gear that has simplified functionality that every gigging musician needs. I will post my results after testing. :-)

UPDATE:

It turns out that the first test with an XLR male/female cable from the Mustang L XLR Out to PE60 XLR in solved the Loud HUM. There still is a hiss on overdriven amp models, but I get that on other gear as well. As mentioned in another post, it still does not solve the issue with the UNBALANCED L + R out on the unit. Still a great piece of gear and sounds terrific.....(Now off to solve my windows XP , IE 7, problems using fuse 2.6)

Hi 97teledlx,

I'm glad to hear that running balanced XLR lines resolved the issue you were experiencing. And as always, thanks to scott-uk for his ongoing contributions here.

Best Regards,

Alan

Alan,

Thank you responding to my post. I have used a lot of gear over the years and if Fender can resolve the unbalanced line HUM and manufacture a more robust power supply, I think your team would have a home run in the making, with the Mustang Floor. Looking forward to what the coming year has to offer. Merry Christmas and happy new year everyone!

(Btw, for the mustang floor, a few more additional amps and/or effects would be nice in a possible firmware update!)

Hi 97teledlx,

You are very welcome. I am happy to assist. And we appreciate your thoughts and input regarding your Fender® Mustang™ Floor. I will pass them along to the appropriate folks here at HQ. You have a nice holiday season as well.

Best Regards,

Alan

I have my mustang floor going through my boss gt-3 send return loop and also going through a behringer tube mic preamp that has unbalanced and balanced 1/4'' outputs but i used to use TS unbalanced patch cords for the input and output on this preamp and i did get noise and some hum with the unbalanced cables.

To fix this problem i used balanced 1/4" TRS phono jacks on the input and output with my behringer preamp but here is the trick,DO NOT USE THE 3 WIRE HOOKUP! Instead i only soldered the tip= + and the sleeve = negitive,i did not use the ring connection. I think the problem is that when a TS 1/4" jack is used with the unbalanced, balanced 1/4" input and output with my behringer and also other guitar effect processors that use these same type of connections the sleeve on the TS unbalanced 1/4" jack shorts out to the ring connection on the input and outputs that also have balanced wiring most likely causing noise and hum problems.
