I've been gigging with my MIII since they came out and really like. My only issue is a certain harshness in the mid-range. I don't hear the harshness through headphones so I assume it is in the speaker. Has anyone tried other speakers? I'd like one that is a little smoother but won't drastically change the sound. All suggestions appreciated.

Hey,

before gutting your amp I would suggest you try several combinations of cabinet simulations as you will get pretty much similar results (or even more extreme) as changing your speaker.

One thing you will never get out of the mustang speaker are high frequency sounds, that you are going to get a lot of, using phones. Please take into consideration that a 12" speaker is considered a woofer by all people except guitar players :)

I've spent many hours with Fuse trying all possibilities. I like the high end quite a lot and prefer 12" speakers. There'es just some harshness that I can't get rid of compared to other amps and to the MIII with headphones.

Are you sure you are not just hearing some fizz? Kidding and sorry!

If it were me, I would void any warranty and just pop a Celestion Vintage 30 into it just to hear how it sounds. Heck, I might even do it to my Mustang 2.

It doesn't take rocket science to figure out that Fender couldn't have put high dollar speakers in these amps at its price point.

I wonder about this myself. I would think, because it needs to emulate so many different sounds, that the speaker in the Mustang would be on the "hifi" side, with an extended upper range. But if that's dead wrong, and it's just a cheap guitar speaker, I've got a Weber here that makes for a great improvement in my Deluxe Reverb. I could put the original speaker back in the Deluxe, but the Weber in the Mustang, and might get a significant improvement.

What does anyone think?

Tim

The Mustangs are modeling a lot of amps but they are all guitar amps so the speakers will be similar.

I own two Deluxe Reverbs; you have got to do this and then get back to us and let us know how it sounds. :)

If your Weber isn't rated at 100 watts or more, you could wind up damaging it.

I don't have a Mustang III, but I do have a Mustang Floor that I am running through a Rane Dual 15 EQ into QSC GX5 amp into a 2 x12 cab loaded with two 16ohm 12" Texas Heats. It is sounding pretty awesome and I got a nice rack gig bag for the amp and the eq. That weighs in around 30lbs and the cab with the speakers is around 45lbs. I will probably get one of those Crown XLS 1500's, they only weigh around 8lbs, so then the whole rig would only be about 55lbs. With a ton of power.

I have been toying with the idea of getting one of those Mustang III's for a practice and grab and go rig. I had a Mustang V, but it was a little much. I did love that stereo effects loop for my stereo effects.

I have A/B'd the QSC setup against my Tweaker 15, Blues Deluxe and Blues Deville and it is pretty close or better than all three, especially with the cleans. Hell the crunch I can get with the Floor Twin setting and the QSC will go straight through your gut when I kick my Hardwire CM2 and Fulltone Fulldrive 2 Mosfet on at the same time...

The Texas Heats have 150 watt rating.

Hi,

the Mustang 3 does not have a cheap speaker (the Celestion G12T-100 is more expensive than many weber's, and is worth around half the price of the Mustang 3 alone) and it has probably the flatest response I have seen in a guitar speaker, which is what you would look for on a speaker that is supossed to emulate many others

Image

I can not find any weber frequency response charts, the most I found was that they have "Tight low end, detailed high end" in the case of the 12A125A. I guess that means that the response is not flat and has more reponse to higher frequencies, go figure.

As a comparison this is the frequency response of an eminence Legend 1258, as you can see it has, compared to the celestion, more mid response, which you might like or not, but is probably not something you want on an modelling amp that is supossed to emulate from Champ speakers to Bassman speakers.

Image

Another example, in this case a Jensen P12R, which has pretty much no mids at all. I'm pretty sure the Vox AC-15 emulation would sound awful on it :)

That makes sense. If the Mustang is going to emulate everything from champ to a Marshall stack...and I know it can't get the visceral impact of the latter, but it can get the tone...It wouldn't have to be "hifi" in the sense of frequency extension into tweeter territory, but it would have to be pretty linear, and capable of wide dynamic range. And I think it is. I just got back from a gig. I played the night on 3 presets I made based on a Twin, a Deluxe Reverb and British 60s (Vox). The Mustang captured those three sounds very well. Even the Twin, which I used for clean tone. When I switched to that preset it just sounded bigger, like a couple of 12" speakers. And it responded like a Twin, too. You could just keep getting louder, and it stayed clean.

It's really pretty remarkable with that little Mustang can do. I think I'll leave it alone, and leave the Weber in the Deluxe.

Tim

Interesting replies all. I agree that it should be a neutral sounding speaker. I was wondering if anyone has tried various speakers. Also does anyone else hear the harshness that I hear?

There are threads on the Telecaster users forum (tdpri.com - not the official Fender forum) where people say they have swapped speakers with good results.
