My Fender Mustang II 40w (just bought it a few days ago)
has a problem when i plug my amp into my PC using the USB interface..
when i plug my amp it produces static electricity into my guitar's strings. when i touch it, it feels tingly and it produces noise as always when i'm close to the computer. but sometimes when i touch the strings the sound and static electricity goes away.. my brother was shocked when he touched me while i hold my guitar (when connected in PC)

I use a USB cable extension when plugging it on PC is it a problem?
Image

Should i plug it directly on my PC's CPU or i can use the extensions?

if this is not the problem what can be the problem?

If the strings are tingly you're not getting static you're getting powered electricity.
Might only be 5v USB power but shouldn't be happening.
Something is faulty!
Strings shoud be isolated these days anyway - is it an old guitar?

I agree this is not static, you are just been electrocuted in a mild way :)

If you can feel it may be well above 5v, and frankly it sounds like an accident waiting to happen. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR COMPUTER HAS A WELL GROUNDED CONNECTION BEFORE PLAYING AGAIN. This includes:
-making sure your pc has power cable with the ground connection intact
-your PC is connected to a power outlet with a good ground connection
-your mustang is connected to a power outlet with a good ground connection
-both power outlets must share the same ground reference or things like this would happen (it should be the case if your electric circuits where correctly designed and installed)

In the meantime, PLEASE, stay away from this setup.

both the power cable of my PC and amp are with 3-prong power cable.. i think this makes them well grounded right?
My amp, guitar, and PC are in good condition.. it doesnt have any problem when i just play it normally... the problem only occurs when i plug my amp to my PC to Edit and download Presets and recording.. I use the usb cable that came with the mustang II in the box and i use a usb cable extension because the usb plug of my CPU is located at the back of it and its hard to reach it. xD
so the problem can be the usb cable or not? :?:

Only if the wall socket they're plugged into had a good ground connection! The socket may be faulty (or the wiring behind the wall leading to it...).

Or even if all the mains wiring is grounded, it's unlikely the audio 'ground' is connected to the mains earth/ground. So something (eg see below) could still be putting a voltage onto the audio lines, and then the only path to ground is through you...

Well, the USB cable itself probably isn't at fault - on its own it obviously can't electrocute you. It's starting to sound as though the USB connection is acting as a conduit for a stray voltage to get from your PC to your amp, and thence to your guitar. A different USB cable won't make any difference.

I agree with the other posts. Stop using this setup until you've found the cause of this problem (or get a competent electrician if you're not sure what to check yourself). A potential mains voltage leak is not to be treated lightly. It may of course turn out to be something trivial, but until you're certain, don't take the risk.

Unlikely question but worth asking: does the room / building where you're using the equipment have a three-phase supply? If it's your house probably not. If it's (eg) a rehearsal hall, it could well have. Are you plugging all items of electrical equipment, that are inter-connected with each other, into the same phase?

When I worked as a PC technician centuries ago I came across cheap PC power supplies that leaked power into the chassis every single day. Every single connection from the PC to other peripherals carries then AC, possibly frying either your peripheral or the user :)
Normally a good ground connection will cover this issue, as the leaked AC will be driven to ground... unless your ground connection is not good (particularly if the last electrician servicing the power outlet decided that ground connections are overrated anyways so he decided not to install it properly :)

Hi pet415,

We will be happy to assist. At this point we recommend you contact us directly so we can get your Fender Mustang II into a Fender Service Center. We aren't sure if this is a grounding issue in your home or if its something caused by your amplifier. Please include your full name, address, phone number and amp serial number, so we can assist further. Thanks.

Hi Guys,

We would like to add the following information to this thread that is intended for all users of Fender FUSE connected amplifiers with USB connectivity:

In addition to the recommendation to get the amp discussed in this thread to a Fender Service Center, we would further recommend that Fender FUSE connected amplifiers with USB connectivity be used with the included USB standard A to mini B connector. If the user wishes to extend the length of the cable run, a standard USB (non-repeating) extension cable should be used.
