Whenever I'm playing on a clean amp model I can hear a fuzz type tone underlying the note being played.
It almost sounds as if I'm being doubled by a quiet fuzz pedal.

Anyone else having this issue?

I'm using the Mustang IV.

Thanks,
The Eph

Yes, many have this issue. Orcatraz has given you a link to the long vitriolic discussion thread. You should post further replies there.

The sound is commonly referred to as "fizz." It's a defect in the Mustang III-V series which Fender fails to disclose in its advertising literature, and shamefully refuses to cover under its "warranty." It annoys some more than others. If it bothers you and your return period has expired, your only choice is to sell it or live with it. You will not be able to exchange it, or pry your money back out of Fender's cold grip of death.

Thanks for the response guys!

I'm thinking it might be an AC hum issue.
Kind of makes me think that the amp doesn't know how to process the hum properly so it causes that fuzz tone instead.

I'm coming to this conclusion because when I first got the amp a week ago I had it set up in a different spot in my room.
Since I have moved it to a different location I'm now noticing this noise.

Before I read through that monster thread, has anyone tried a power conditioner to remedy the problem?

Thanks again,
The Eph

Hi,

The fizz on the long thread has nothing to do with 60 or 120 hz hum.

Some quick hints to check if you have main hum in your setup:
-disconnect the guitar cable from the mustang input, if you still hear the hum is either a failed ground connection or some sort of electromagnetic interference direct to your mustang (not likely unless you are really close to a motor or similar)
-connect the cable instrument to the mustang input but not your guitar. hold the other cable end in the air without touching it. this might give you some hum bot should not give you much, otherwise replace your cable by a shorter, better quality one.
-connect the cable to your guitar. without playing move to guitar volume from min to max and hear the difference. That hum is product of your pickups (more so if they are single coils)
-put the guitar volume at max and move around the room with your guitar, you will get more hum at some spots than others (particularly close to the amp) avoid those spots while playing :)

if all that does not apply to you you might be having some sort of problem with your amp, including the fizz as a possibility (it could be, for example, that the speaker is loose). Regarding the fizz, in my experience all the M3-4-5 I have tried exhibit the fizz if you know where to look for, is just that depending on where you are standing and at which guitar and amp volume you are playing you might hear it more or less as the speakers tend to be VERY directional, particularly at fizz frequencies.

I'm familiar with the regular pickup hum you are referring to, especially with single coil pickups.
I'm using active EMG 85's and 81's so the hum you are speaking of is minimal.

This "fuzz" sound is underlying that tone. Does that makes any sense to you?

I recommend you go to the first post of the fizz thread and listen to the audio clip.

If what you hear is a sound that appears half a second or so after you play the note (while the note decays), it sounds modulated and treble, it is the fizz. You will hear it particularly with bass notes with the Deluxe 65 or Bassman basic presets (try the 7th or 12th fret on the 6th string and let it ring, make sure your master volume is at least 2.5) but be warned, once you heard it you will hear it almost everywhere, with any emulation and on any string :) consider yourself warned.

I listened to that clip and my "fuzz" is not the "fizz".
*Might be the funniest thing I've typed in a while*

I will try your suggestion though with fretting the notes.
Yeesh...now I'm kinda scared lol.

So you don't feel alone in the dark, it would be great if you can post a link to a recording of your fuzz-not-fizz sound :)

I just might do that!

But before that I'm gonna stop and pick me up a power conditioner.
I need one anyway.
Been putting it off for WAY too long.

funny. nobody even asked what firmware you have loaded. Certain people around here are quick to diagnose without having any supporting information about a person's equipment and configuration. Example: viewtopic.php?f=27&t=80390&p=914603#p914603

I did pick up a power conditioner at it seemed to help quite a bit.
just got a little of the typical pick up interference.

I suggest that everyone pick one up.
Only $20

*Correction*
BAH!!! I was wrong.
It's still there.
It was less noticeable at lower volumes...but I cranked it up loud and there it was.
Such a shame. What a great amp except for this issue.

If you could post a recording of what you are hearing, maybe you can get some help with it. Then, again, maybe not...

Ephminus, you mentioned you have EMG active pickups, did you try changing the battery for a fresh one?

Tomorrow I'm lugging this Mustang IV in for another one.
This one was the floor model so it'll be nice to get one in the box at least, although I have to take a hell of a drive to go and get it.

Here's some more info. The manufacturing date is 122010
Who knows how long this amp sat on the showroom floor.
I tried it out of course, but with the noise in there I couldn't hear the fuzz/fizz.

Hopefully I will get one that was manufactured more recently.
Wish me luck!

...and yeah, I replaced the batteries.
Happens on both my guitars too.
Just for more info...
Schecter Hellraiser w/EMG's - coil taps
ESP/LTD Viper 400 w/EMG
....don't worry I'm planning on getting a Fender Stratocaster soon.
For someone that isn't "metal" I certainly have some metal guitars huh? lol
Hey, they sound and play great, especially the Schecter with the coil taps!

Anyway, I've gone through that infamous monster fizz thread and listened to the samples that have been posted.
I definitely have had the same issue, although it seems that some have had it worse then me.
I have to say that the power conditioner did help a bit, but it didn't solve the issue completely.
