I have a Mustang 3 which I love. It sounds great through its internal speaker.

When I need to play through headphones, I use my cheap, closed back Behringer HPM1000's; the sound is muddy throughout and lacks base - compared to the real sound.

I've also tried my quality in-ear earphones, but they rattle and lack bass.

Borrowing a better pair of headphones (Sennheiser HD 215), the sound is MUCH better yet noticeably lacks bass response (a characteristic of these cans). So I reckon a suitable set of headphones will fix it.

So, can anyone recommend some open back, circumaural headphones at perhaps US$140, that will sound nearly as good as the internal speaker?
I'd prefer an efficient set that doesn't need amplification.

PS. Google searches would be simpler if it was called Mustang 3 rather than Mustang III.

I have a pair of Sennheiser semi-open-back, over-ear headphones. They're pretty decent audiophile headphones and I get a good sound using them with my Mustang amp. Not as good as the real speaker, but then I never like headphone sound as much as the room-filling sound of real speakers...

My model is now long-since discontinued, but iirc were in your price range. So I could suggest that whatever model of that type Sennheiser currently make, might be a good choice.

FWIW I use a pair of closed back Audio Technicas that cost a fair bit a good few years ago. These are great for general music on the PC and I find them ok for doing audio edit stuff with a DAW, that I later play on the stereo, in the car etc

But the sound when plugged in to my Mustang II is just not good at all - sounds thin, not enough low mids, let alone bass - so I wonder if someone has found a good match that works with the emulated output.
I do wonder if the emulated output just doesn't match the speaker as well as it could.

@scott-uk,
My reading of reviews says that open back will both sound better and be more comfortable than closed back.
The Sennheiser models in my price range are said to be unimpressive.
Audio Technica seem to have some potential winners, maybe the ATH-AD300 or 400.
So hopefully we'll receive a few more recommendations.
I want the sound through the cans to be very close to the sound through the speakers both to maximise the enjoyment and to enable tweaking of settings.

@markcc,
That is the kind of issue that I'm looking to avoid and I'm hoping that a suitable set of cans will do so.

Headphones are peculiar items. Some of them talk about reproducing frequencies up to about 46,000 Hz.
I just laugh at that because my ears can hear nothing higher than around 13,500 Hz.

I would suggest the nady QH560 headphones from musicians friend,i did not check there current price but they should be around $40,sometime they are on sale for 2 for $40 or buy 1 get one free. I bought my QH560 headphones years ago from M.F. and they sound very good with my mustang and my other modeling amps,these headphones have a very clear sound and are not muddy at all and the mid's have a bump in there frequency range witch is good for guitar and also vocals and also the high frequency is very good with these headphones.

These headphones are very loud compared to other headphones in the $40 range and sound much better,the low end can be a little weak but that depends on your amp model but i would say the low end is flat without any bass boost that many cheaper headphones have and that is a plus in my opinion. I would say the QH560's compare to $100 headphones and i would give them a try.

These are the ones I got to use with my Mustang 2 and 5.

Sony MDR-V600 Studio Monitor Headphones
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Studio-Monitor-MDR-V600-Headphone/dp/B00001W0DI

And I can use them with my PC or plug them into my Peavey mixing board for recording purposes when I have my amps mic'd up.

Thanks for the recommendations.

I wonder how they compare to the sound of the Mustang 3 speaker? This is the tricky part for which I'm seeking to benefit from others' experience.

Grado headphones rock (pun intended) for this. The lower models (SR60 and SR80) are a bit "harsh" but are quite inexpensive, and overall "smoothness" improves as you go higher up in price. Probably the best value in the whole line would be the SR225's.

Stay away from the iGrados. They are intended as small portable headphones for use with iPods and MP3 players -- and they do this rather well -- but they're not in the same league as the full-size open-back Grados.

Grados are phenomenal for any flavor or rock music, and also do well with jazz and blues. About the only thing they don't seem to do well is many styles of electronic music and pop, but if you're here you probably don't need to worry about that.

My first Grados were the SR-80's and I was immediately hooked. I eventually went all out and bought some of the very expensive models and was completely floored by how well they sound. After much deliberation I thinned out the collection and own only the SR-80 (as a "beater"), an HF-1 and HF-2 (two models designed specifically for the Head-Fi.org community).

Take a look over at Head-Fi.org, since Grados are very popular over there there are almost always a wide range of used Grados for sale by members. I'd start with the SR-80 (or the SR-225 if you can afford it). If you happen do don't like them -- most people seem to either love them or hate them -- you can unload them for the same price you bought them for.

Any questions just let me know.

I use the grado SR-325's with my Mustang III, and I think they hit the sweetspot. The SR-225's you recommend should be just as good. Fantastic reproduction of the clean tones like the Fender twin, and also do quite well with high distortion presets like White Chapel and Liquid solo.
