Today I bought a Mustang1 amp, Ibanez RG-471ahntf guitar and cable, all new. Everything worked great for awhile then I did the software upgrades and it still worked for awhile then the amp made a popping noise one time and the sound is now distorted and the volume on the guitar doesn't work. I reset the amp back to factory settings (exit and power on) but that did not resolve my issue. Can you suggest any troubleshooting techniques? This is my first electric guitar and amp in many years so please explain things simply and in detail.

Thanks!

If you bought it from a shop, I'd take it all back there for them to test/fix for you.

If you want to diagnose it yourself, first thing to do is identify whether it's the amp or guitar that has a problem.

(You say the guitar volume control doesn't work - do you mean it's stuck on full volume, stuck on silent, or ...? I assume you can still turn the knob, it just has no effect?)

Can you plug the guitar into a different amp (or even a microphone input on a PC or your home hi-fi would do). Does the guitar then sound ok and work properly? Does its volume control work normally?

Can you plug something else (another guitar / instrument, or a microphone you can speak into) into the amp? Does that give a non-distorted sound?

It could be as simple as a short-circuit in the guitar volume control wiring, but the above tests will initially determine whether the problem is with the guitar or the amp.

scott-uk,

Thanks for the reply. I bought it at a shop so I will take it back. I would like to try the things you suggested but I don't have any other devices to plug into the amp. The volume is kind of funny. It works in some positions but not others. I will post the results after I go back to the music store.

I went back to the shop where I bought it. We tested everything and quickly identified the amp as defective so they gave me a new amp. My compliments to Music and Arts in Frisco Texas USA, they were very quick to identify and resolve the problem.
