I've used my new Floor unit through my church's PA system about 3 times now. I've noticed that I get a lot of noise when playing through the unit (nothing the gating will help with and ground lift isn't consistently helpful). It is especially bad when I use the Twin amp and a compressor stomp and try to use the volume pedal on quiet songs to do swells. Bad enough that it makes me want to sell it unless I can figure out how to quiet the sound.

Any tips, common experiences?

Thanks

I should add that I tried it again via headphones when I got home and no such noise. It must be that I get noisy power @ church but it seems to be a crap shoot. Any solutions that are not too expensive?

OK, you're changing multiple things at once, so it's hard to pinpoint the problem.

Do you hear the noise through headphones when the whole things's setup in church? If you use just the M-Floor through headphones in church, not connected to the PA, does it sound any different to listenting through headphones with the M-Floor also connected to the PA?

Have you tried the balanced (XLR) vs unbalanced (1/4" TS jacks) outputs from the M-Floor? (Assuming your PA has both types - if not obviously this can't be tested).

Can you take a different "PA" - eg a small combo amp or powered monitor/speaker into church, and test what the M-Floor sounds like through that?

The idea of all the above is to narrow down exactly what is causing the noise. There's no point going and spending money on a solution until you know what you're trying to solve.

Also, what type of noise is it? Mains hum, high-frequence interference, random crackling, ...?

Hmmmm. I use mine at church, direct to the PA, and I don't have this problem. My first inclination is to check out your Utility Menu - your Output Voicing settings. I have mine set to Mono so I can send the Right XLR output to PA and the Left 1/4" output to my Tech 21 Power Engine and adjusted each one seperately.

the wiring at specific buildings have varying quality and can add a lot of noise. do you have a high quality power strip that buffers out ground loops at stuff? im not very electrically inclined so i dont kn ow all the jargon and what not but i do know there is a difference between a 5$ kmart power strip and a 30$ power tap that people use for compouters to guard against power surges and fluxuations. also i know this is obvious but cheap cables SUCK bigtime or if you have a bad cable it can add noise. this process usually takes a good hour but if you are able to access your church sound system before services and do some trial and error swapouts of cables and plugs you might be able to isolate your problem. this all in conjuction with what advice the other people have given which were also all things to investigate. i feel for you cuz we have all spent alot of time trying to fix these kinds of issues. good luck!

Thanks all...I'll check all the good replies to see where it leads me. It sounded great when I got home and listened through headphones as I mentioned above.

DapperDan, I am using left XLR to output to PA (not sure it is mono but I think it is set that way by default and I've not changed it).

andygutmonkey, I'm thinking it is likely "noisy" power so I may try the suggestion to get the power tap. Not sure exactly what to buy but I'll research a little.

Again I appreciate the suggestions. We have a big Christmas show this w/e and I was very discouraged last night @ rehearsal.

Scott, I am 95% sure it is a mains hum.

I may try picking up an Ebtech Hum X...looks like it may help.

Okay, I got the Hum x and it doesn't help. Now, at home again, with headphones on, I have the dreaded noise that makes confidently using the unit an impossibility.

I wonder if the unit is bad...but that doesn't make sense with the on/off nature of this. So frustrating.

Okay, I went back to the 'good' outlet I used at home last night and all is well (not using the hum x). What should I do?

I wonder if it is RF interference instead of mains hum...but after reading some more I don't think so.

a UPS should solve any power issues, although they are a little heavy to bring to gigs. I was looking at this one, it doesn't handle much, but it wouldn't really need to.

Hey,

If you can, I would recommend checking if the offending power outlet has a good ground connection.

Another hint, try to put your Mustang as far as possible from any other electrical equipment. Same thing applies to your guitar while playing (With my strat if i get closer than 2 feet from any electrical motor it hums like it's going to explode)

I played a few places where the kitchen was right next to where the band was, it definitely caused some interference, good point jedi2b
