Hi

I'm using an iMac with Logic Pro. My guitar interface is a Roland VS 100 and I normally have no issues monitoring what I'm recording. I want to use my new Mustang 3 via the USB and Fuse software. I'm getting a signal in Logic no problem but I can't seem to get the sound to go thru the VS 100 and the monitors. After recording I can play it back thru the monitors. It just won't monitor when I'm recording.

Any ideas appreciated.

Mick

You have to be in "software monitoring" mode. You can set this in the Logic Audio preferences or you can also add a "software monitoring" button in the transport bar at the bottom.
Once this is done you have to click the little "I" button on the Mustang Floor track/channel to monitor your input before an during recording.
Hope this helps!

Hi
Thanks so much for that. A simple tick in a box and the problem is fixed. Much appreciated.

Hi

Thanks again for your help. I can now monitor thru the VS-100. However, the sound I am getting thru the monitors has a very different flavour to it compared to listening thru the amp. Should it sound the same as when playing thru the amp or are there other factors at play here? I thought that the presets should sound the same but I've been wrong before.

There will be a difference because of the speaker in your amp and your computer monitoring system.
The usb output is a direct digital signal into your computer and you are listening to this through your computer monitors.
The power amp section of your Mustang might also make a difference.

I have a Mustang Floor unit and the difference between the USB output and the line output is small because I listen both thru the same monitors.

Was going to say the same as denitronik, but he beat me to it. Following on from that...

Try experimenting with different cab simulations to get a sound you like. They should make the USB output sound more like a real amp/speaker - assuming of course that's what you want!

Although my own experience is that guitars never sound right when played through hifi amps and speakers, even with amp/cab modelling up-front. I much prefer the lo-fi sound of a proper guitar amp/speaker - which surprises me as I'm normally a hi-fi purist!

I totally agree. I can not play my M3 and listen through the headphones for more than a couple minutes... I can't stand how clear it sounds :) Cab emulations do help a bit but there's no replacement for the included 12" speaker (certainly not the 2" headphones)

In the other hand some tones might suffer less through usb/phones. Probably clean or blues/jazz tones are the worst case scenario and metal tones might be more acceptable through phones, but that is as subjective as it gets :)

Hi
I guess that leaves me with a few possibilities to ponder while I am at work.

I could keep using the usb connection and adjust the presets on my computer to get a better sound. This sounds like a lot of work and I'm a bit time poor at the moment. Just want to record my music not twiddle with knobs. But I will if I have to.

Or I could run a line from the effects out in the Mustang 3 into my interface (Roland VS-100). Does this bypass the presets on the amp? It's probably no different to the option above in that I will still have to tweak the presets.

Or I could run a line from the headphone socket on the Mustang in to VS-100.

Would any of those methods enable me to get the sounds of the presets into my DAW?

Mmmmmmm could be a long day thinking about that.

To be clear: the USB output from the amp has the amp presets (amp modelling, effects, cab simulation etc). What it doesn't have is the acoustic colouration of the power amp and speaker - although the cab simulation should provide that to some extent.

The fx-send and headphone socket also have all the amp modelling, effects and cab simulation etc. They're just analogue equivalents of the USB audio output. None of the outputs on the amp bypass the modelling, effects, etc.

So all the above methods "enable [you] to get the sounds of the presets into [your] DAW."

If what you want to record is the sound as you hear it coming out of the amp speaker, and nothing else will do, then the only option is probably to mic the speaker and record that. But I'd urge playing with the amp settings some more first, I'm sure you'll get something close enough if not identical.

Hi

Played around with some of the presets and no matter what I do it sounds terrible. I'm playing my telecaster into the Mustang 3, using Logic Pro 9 and the sound is muddy with a very unpleasant sort of empty, echo sound. Hard to describe. I've tried using presets that come close and tweaking them but even when I strip them right back and try introducing the effects back in one by one it sounds like crap. I've tried the last lot of presets that give you a basic amp to build on but that doesn't help either. I just want a simple rhythm guitar sound with a bit of delay and chorus for some west coast country (Eagles mainly). But can't seem to get off first base. Sounds fine when I just go straight thru the Roland VS 100 interface and use the effects in Logic Pro but I really wanted to use the Mustang presets too.

Any ideas from anyone who has achieved success by recording thru USB and a Mustang appreciated.

Mick

Could you please post a sample recording? I might have an idea of what's going on and may be related to ASIO. There are several solutions but I want to be sure before I send you in any direction.

Also, what OS are you using?

Hi

Fairly new at this and not sure how to go about posting a sample. What's the best way? If its a long explanation let me know and I'll try and find out via the Internet.

Cheers

Hi
I'm using an iMac so no ASIO involved.

Thanks anyway.

My guess is that you're getting two monitor signals at the same time; one from Logic (using Software monitoring) and one from your VS-100 interface mixer. Because of the latency created by Logic (dependent upon the size of your buffers) you can get some echo and some comb filtering.
If the recorded guitar sounds different during playback than during monitoring/recording then that's the problem.
From what I have read about the vs-100 you should be able to monitor your guitar directly from the interface without using the Logic Software Monitoring. This would be the preferred way of monitoring because it would give you the shortest latency between what you play and what you ear.
