Hey guys,
I need an audio interface. Here is my setup.
Image

I've been thinking about buying a solid state Fender amplifier (clean presets) to mix it with the H&K tubemeister 5 tube overdrive. (Fender Mustang)

I was wondering if the Fender mustang floor could act as an audio interface for my pc, take in the dry tubemeister 5 (and maybe even add reverb or delay ) signal and process another signal (as as stereo setup) with the preset amplifiers.

OR a little more pricey but better

or if money is no object

any of these would work great and the actually take the place of your computers sound card. I use an Edirol UA-25, works great and sound awesome.

Oh, and I am by no means plugging GC, it was just convenient to get links from all the same place. Personally, I would prefer a dedicated audio interface than to depend on an amp. With the above you can plug anything into them.

I'm not familiar with the Floor but the amps can't be used for audio output from the PC - they are input devices only. I assume the same is true of the Floor.
In that case you could use the Floor to record but would need another interface to monitor.

Why not use an inexpensive mixer.

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Peavey-PV-6 ... 1464056.gc

Many have EFX built in and you can use your stereo, or powered monitors, instead of head phones all the time. It is a very versatile way to go.

While I agree with the USB mixer idea, I would not recommend the Peavey. They just don't sound very good in my opinion. I use an Allen & Heath Zed10FX and it sounds really really good. Yes, it's more money but its sonics, features, flexibility and quality make it well worth the extra cost. Here's some info on it.

I'm not 100% on this but a mixer such as the one suggested would do the job for input capabilities but you would then still be dependent on the computers sound card. Most stock sound cards I think are not as good sound quality as aftermarket stuff. There may not be that big a difference though and if it sounds good enough to you for what you need, that would work.
The Mustang Floor has an INSERT switch which you could insert the H&K into the front end of the signal (pre anything on the Mustang). Think of it as an effects pedal between your guitar and the Floor. Then you can go USB into the computer, but this will not, as stated, process sound FROM computer but, if your computer has a sound card, you can go out of that to powered monitors and be good.
However, neither of the 2 will give you MIDI inputs to your computer if you think you will need that. I stand by my suggestions as the most versatile option.
I have my UA25 for the interface, a Mackie 802VLZ3 mixer with a Mustang Floor, GT10, and GR55 into the mixer, then the mixer into the UA25. I use a pair Alto TS110a powered pa speakers. Everything going in or out the interface goes thru them. With the UA25 I can run all as a small PA system, computer sound system, or play, record, and monitor thru headphones only. What in your wallet?

Only if you need to have Midi capabilities. Otherwise, a USB enabled mixer is the sound card/Audio Interface.

The Zed10FX's sound quality is, in my opinion, much better than most OEM sound cards.

Only if you absolutely need Midi.

You can do the exact same thing with a USB enabled mixer but with one less device to connect to as the mixer is the audio interface to the computer. Much simpler.

By the way, how do you like those Alto speakers?
Peace.

I needed myself a small mixer, and in addition I needed a bidirectional USB interface to put together a small home studio.
I got this excellent product from Behringer:
http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/Q802USB.aspx

Less than 100 bucks and has way more feastures I need. You also have smaller and bigger versions. Perfect for a home studio.

In the other hand If what you need is just an interface for your guitar... just use the Mustang USB output for recording. Having USB input in the mustang seems useless to me as the speaker is no good either for bass - drums or vocals so I don't see the need for it in the mustang anyway.

If what you want in the other hand is kind of a guitar-jukebox, maybe the GDECs are a better option with track - guitar preset pairing, and an included tweeter to play your Mp3s and whatnot.

I assume an audio interface will make Ableton run faster, is this true?

And if so, is the Behringer also a a/i, will it help to reduce the CPU load? Is it an interface also?

Will an interface even help? I'm having major CPU use issues lately, and I cant upgrade my computer yet.

I love how the Behringer ones look and I'd really like to get one, but I can abstain if it wont actually do much in the way of helping my CPU load.

It won't do darn thing to help your CPU, sorry. More RAM might help, it usually does. If your hard drive's getting full that can slow things down too.

Damn.

Unfortunately my computer only supports 2 gigs of RAM, and the other one that I could use for some reason runs Ableton really really slow.

But my drive has been getting a bit full, so I will be clearing some more room.

Does it only have two slots? Even then you could use two 2gig RAM chips for a total of 4 gigs. Is it an OS limitation?

Ableton and the like are high end apps that will suck the life out of your CPU.

If what you need is only hi quality recording with some postprocessing but not arrangement advanced features you can give Audacity a try. Is free, loaded with features, works great with the mustangs (either via USB or the phones jack) and will run on a 486 :)
