I talked to a fellow at his guitar & amp repair shop yesterday who is an authorized Fender repair/dealer. I mentioned that I enjoyed my Mustang amp (it's a Mustang II) and he was very dismissive of the line, claimed that Fender's cost per unit landed off the container is $4.00! I said that seemed unlikely but he was adamant that his source on this info is unimpeachable. Also said that official fender policy re: field repairs on this line (he showed me their sheet) is to replace, rather than repair the Mustang mini,I and II models, as well as host of others like the Rumble, etc. . I was a little surprised, but apparently the financials make it worth replacing a unit up to 4 times rather than repairing. I don't care, I still love my Mustang! Just a bit of Fender forum fodder!

I'm not knocking you, or your source, but without seeing this in black and white on some very official Fender letterhead with some corporate names attached for verification, I call BS...... If I had to even garner a guess, SWAG at best, I would say a minimum of $40 for the lower end units but I am not even speculating.

Twang99,
I really hate it when people make claims like this. Whether they're accurate or not, these people never seem to take into account the cost of R&D, Design and Sourcing costs. It's a completely idiotic way of determining the value of any product. Sure, Fender could have used much better quality components but you can say that about any company. None of us have any idea how much Fender spent developing their modeling technology and personally, at the price points these amps are at, I don't know of any product that can even compare sound-wise.

The bottom line for me is that this guy's a repair guy. What the heck does he know about creating, developing and selling a mass produced modeling amp. I'd love to see his "product line".

O.

agreed, total B.S. Everyone's an expert and everyone has the 'inside word'. The truth is, this amp line grows on trees, so the price of cultivating the trees alone exceeds $4. Then they need people to pick them, remove the stems, and wash them prior to shipping. The bruised units are discarded after their seeds are removed, which is almost a total loss. I'd say the cost is closer to $8-$10 per unit.

And not only that. I hear that the wood used in Fender Custom Shop guitars grows on trees!

Not to be redundant but $4.00,...are you kidding me??? You must have misunderstood him to say $40.00 or he has not a clue to what stuff costs to make in life. Let us not forget R&D. I also totally understand that it would be cheaper to replace than to pay him to fix something on at least the mini, 1 or 2. My 2 cents!!! :)

A lot of tech guy's are tube snobs and dislike most modeling and other amps made in china because of the cheaper components used in these amps, they like the higher end amps because they have better components in them but that does not mean the fender mustang or other modeling amps sound bad because of this.

The tech guy most likely sees cheap caps and some other components that are not good in his opinion with the mustang and it just makes him feel better to thrash it and then he makes a silly untrue statement about it costing $4.00,i also agree that it is more likely to cost around $40.00.
