I see the Mustang Floor on sale at a great price, and it's really got me leaning towards getting one. I have some questions about it though before I take the plunge.

I am wanting to use it in stompbox mode without the modeling, as I have a 3 channel tube head that I absolutely love. I have seen elsewhere in this forum that is indeed possible by turning off the "amp" section. This thing looks like it would be a GREAT deal as a substitute for getting a bunch of stompboxes and putting together a pedalboard. When using this unit in such a way, just how "neutral" is it when all the stomp effects are bypassed? In other words, will it affect my tone noticeably when I'm not using it vs. plugging my guitar straight into my amp? Is there any noise added? Is there a slight signal loss? Things like that.

It does occur to me that if there is much of a difference, an A/B loop could be set up to take the whole unit completely out of the signal path, but if I don't have to do that, I would consider it very much an added value.

As to the effects themselves, how "analog" can they sound? I realize it's probably not going to be dead on, and that there is likely to be *some* digital edge to it, but are they close enough to good analog pedals to get by? Getting two MXR pedals can cost as much as this whole unit, especially at the sale price.

Thanks,
Barry

There nothing better than evaluating the Mustang Floor yourself but I can give you my impressions.
The unit is quite transparent, I like the way it reacts to the volume and tone controls of my guitar just like plugging my guitar directly in a real amp.
There is a master volume control so you have plenty of signal coming out of the unit if you want and very little noise if setup correctly. You can independently EQ the various outputs to your taste.
The effects are great though some will have a level drop (wah, ring modulator) which could be annoying. I like the spring reverbs a lot and they sound quite "analogish".
I find (to my taste) that the better distortion sounds come from the amp modeling so I used them even with a real amp.
Add to this that I can use the Floor as a MIDI controller make it a very versatile unit.

Thanks for the reply!

I'm still a little back-and-forth..

It sounds like EQing all the outputs it a bit much, since what I'm wanting is the same tone (or very close) as if the unit were not there. Tone I got, effects I want. I'm hoping for a real "multi-effects" pedal.. like what used to be advertised before amp modeling became all the rage. I'm wanting to be able to disable all tone-shaping and EQ in the unit.

Not too concerned about the ring mod, as that's something I've never found a need for.. and I have a wah I can use if this one doesn't work for me. So on the good side, that potential negative is pretty much a wash. What about the other modulation effects like chorus, flange, phaser, etc? Do those have a level drop?

Also on the positive side, the price is REALLY good on these things right now.. if it doesn't work in my main rig, I'd at least have a cool toy to mess with at home, right? Direct recording song ideas, etc..

As you say, I'm asking a bunch of questions, but I'm not REALLY gonna know till I get the darn thing, am I? ;)

There is no level drop with the other modulations and the output EQ is quite useful if you want to make sure that all your outputs sound the same.
Let me give you an example.
Say you want to use two amps that are not the same for the stereo effects (which by the way are quite nice) you can separately EQ each output of the Floor unit to get a better match between the two amps.
I know you can use the EQ on the amps to do this but let say you can't get a good match because the amps have different cabs for instance then the Floor output EQ is a blessing.

Sounds great! Thanks so much for talking me through it.

I think I'm gonna grab one up.

Your help has been very much appreciated (and speedy), and I'm sure I'll be back to this forum when I start digging into this thing!

Hi,

Just thought I'd throw in my experiences.

I recently switched from a Line 6 Spider IV 30Watt modelling amp combo to a Fender Hotrod Deluxe for live performance. I'm relatively new to gigging. So I found myself without the built in FX of the Spider. Having looked around at multi-FX pedal options, I decided to go for the Mustang Floor for seemingly very similar reasons to barryfaulkner. I.e. not really interested in the amp modelling, but as programmable stomp boxes for the Hotrod.

I'm not hugely experienced but for me, having the Mustang in the FX loop of the Hotrod, it seems to interfere very little with the amp characteristics. It supplies very nice modulation FX and I have a "Clean" preset that has no FX whatsoever and to my ears is as if it wasn't there... though still gives me the use of the expression pedal for volume control, which can be handy when switching channel on the Hotrod with its foot switch.

Note, however, that when I first connected it to the computer, the Fuse software gave me a firmware update of the Mustang which then disabled the volume control of the expression pedal in amp bypass mode. This was only resolved by downloading and installing the v1.4 firmware.

I also look forward to trying some home recording using the Mustang Floor and taking advantage of its amp modelling capability but I've yet to explore that area.

Hi GaryW,

We are happy to hear that you are enjoying the Fender Mustang Floor. It seems as if you have been given some great advice here on the Forum, regarding how to operate the Mustang Floor unit. Depending on your preference the Mustang Floor comes bundled with some third party software such as; the Ableton Live Lite software. This is a DAW which you could use to record your ideas/songs with. If you are operating on a Windows platform and wish to record using the direct signal from any Fender FUSE connected device, you will need to download the Fender Universal ASIO driver. In order for you to redeem your software serial numbers you will need to setup a Fender FUSE Community user account. I have attached few links below that should prove useful to you. Please let us know if we can assist you further.

Fender Mustang Floor Owner’s Manual:

Fender Audio Driver for Windows (for use with Third Party Software):
