I'm thinking about purchasing a pair of powered monitors, such as the Yamaha HS80 monitors - to connect my M-Floor to instead of connecting it to an amplifier. 2 questions:

1 - Has anyone tried this?
2 - What are your thoughts on this?

I'm using the Mustang Floor with one Alto TS110a and the results are excelent. It won't replace my tube amp and pedalboard rig, but there are venues where is so convenient. I'm a keyboardist too, and this way I can use my monitor for keys, acoustic, and electric guitar. One simple, affordable, and lightweight rig.

I've had also RCF 310a and QSC K10, and there's no much difference between them and the Alto. Not always cheaper is worse; same with Mustang vs HD500, for me it's much eaasier getting good sounds from the Mustang.

Running amp sims into FRFR setups is definitely the way to go in my opinion - I run the Floor into a Behringer B215D Powered Speaker (sometimes two) - tonal fluctuation is minimized when I switch to and from headphones. This also makes the recording process more predictable, too. I say go for it (it being some sort of FRFR - if the Yamaha makes you happy, that's the one for you).

The Yamahas were just an example. I still have to research to do before I try, then buy. Thanks everyone for your insight on this.

Another option is the Tech 21 Power Engine. I've been using one for several years with various guitar preamps, and now using it with the Mustang Floor. The Power Engine is just a power amp and 12" speaker in a cabinet, and is designed specifically for powering electric guitar preamps. It's got 3 tone controls (high, mid, low), a level control, a 1/4" in, an XLR in, and an XLR out (works great for running direct to P.A.). I love it. If something happened to mine, I'd have to buy another one right away.

Well, here's a cool option... If you can find one.
It's the Groove Tubes SFX-100 - https://www.google.com/search?q=groove+tubes+sfx-100&hl=en&client=safari&tbo=u&tbm=isch&source=univ&sa=X&ei=ys2SUIGpMeGe2QX0kIDwBw&ved=0CDIQsAQ&biw=1024&bih=644#biv=i|2;d|U4xfMouErLcqjM:

I'm lucky enough to own one even though it's been at a friends house for a year now :?
I used to run my GT-8 through it in stereo! It's really cool getting a very wide stereo sound from a single point source and not have to pack around two amps or speakers.

O.

When I got my Floor I looked into picking up a powered monitor to use with it. There's no reason that this would not work. After much consideration I went with an Acoustic B20 bass amp instead. They were on sale at GC for less than $100.00. It has a nice clean, flat sound and doubles as a good bass practice amp. I did a little modification to improve the sound. I lined the speaker cavity with acoustic foam and added speaker and line out jacks. I can record from it and/or use different speaker cabinets with the amp. I am very happy with this setup.

I just picked up PC speakers(Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 $150). There's an 1/8" aux jack on one of the speakers, so I can also play along with music from the PC.

Now I'm wondering why I need my 1x12's and Alesis reference amp.

You're running your mustang floor directly into them, and at the same time they're connected to your PC? Interesting. I have the Bose 2.1 system connected to my PC, but they don't have any auxiliary inputs.

BTW, I'm waiting for Black Friday to get here. Should be some great deals on speakers.

Update: I finally got around to ordering the Yamaha powered monitors, but I have questions about cabling them. The speakers have XLR and Phone Jack inputs (TRS, Balanced, or Unbalanced). The floor has XLR and Unbalanced outputs, as well as a headphone jack.

So, can I safely connect XLR to XLR, and what should I be concerned about?

How about the Unbalanced output to the Phone Jack inputs? Should I use speaker or instrument cable?

Thanks,
Bruce

Yes you should be able to safely connect these. If it were me, I'd just double-check that the 'hot' and 'cold' pins are wired the same way round on both pieces of equipment - they should be, there is a standard for XLR connectors, maybe I'm just paranoid :)

Instrument cable. This is a low-level signal, use a normal shielded cable. The M-Floor doesn't have an amplified output suitable for directly driving speakers (well, other than headphones etc).

Thanks for the reply Scott. I appreciate the heads-up on the pins.

I connected the floor to the speakers via instrument cable, and it sounds fan-freaking-tastic. No noise at all. Didn't have much time, but I did get the chance to play my strat through the '65 Twin model. Looking forward to checking out the other models as well, and also playing my Les Paul through this setup.

I"ve use my Floor both ways...with my Hot Rod Deluxe and also through powered Mackie 15 TH speakers. Get much better sound with them than with the amp..I haven't played out with the Mustang though, I am still stuck on my pedalboard and amp. At home have been using pedalboard into effects loop on Mustang then out to both Mackies and amp and get a great sound..

Appreciate the response. I've been playing through my Yamaha monitors, and I'm totally enjoying the sounds I'm getting. I certainly don't have the clean headroom you get with your mackies, but for bedroom playing its awesome sounding. Plugged my LP into my Marshall Class 5 and it didnt sound nearly as good as my floor into the monitors. I could see this being an awesome gigging tool, for sure.
