I have been using the Mustang III amp for a couple of months now and the operation has been pretty much flawless. Yesterday, I received a new Boss RC-30 loop station pedal and I plugged it in to the amp's effects loop.

While the pedal functions alright, there are a couple of areas where I need help.

1. There is a loud hum/buzzing sound since the time the RC-30 has been placed in the chain.
* Power connections: The amp and the loop pedal both go to separate power outlets. The amp has a 3 prong plug and the pedal a 2-prong plug.
* Effects loop: Amp Send -> RC30 Input; RC30 output -> Amp receive

FWIW, the hum noise changes in the exact same rate as the flashing Tap/Tempo button of the RC30.
What do I need to do to fix this hum? I have tried changing wall sockets, tried plugging both into the same wall socket, changed cables, but the hum stays.

2. Second "problem" is that with the above connections, when the RC30 is switched off, there is no sound coming from the amp. Is this normal operation?

Looking for some inputs on fixing the above. Thanks in advance folks.

Have you tried plugging your guitar into the looper and looper into instrument input of your amp?

Yes, this is normal operation. You're diverting the amp's signal path through the effects loop (specifically, plugging into the amp's fx-return socket switches the signal path from internal-to-the-amp to the fx loop*). If whatever is in that loop (RC30 in your case) is turned off, then the signal the amp sends to the fx loop won't make it back to the amp. The amp doesn't know that your RC30 is turned off, so doesn't know to do any different. If you turn the RC30 off, you have to unplug the connection to the amp's FX-return, or maybe fit some sort of bypass into your effects loop signal chain. This is how most amps behave, there's nothing peculiar about the Mustang.

*Most amps, including the Mustang, switch the audio path between internal and fx-loop, but only one is active at a time; a few amps allow both signal paths to be active simultaneously.

Is the AC adapter for the RC-30 providing enough amperage to the looper? I've found that my RC-20 hums when it gets insufficient current.

O.

Haven't done that. Will try it today. However, that would not be my preferred way of playing because if I change any preset on the amp, the stored loop changes too.

Makes sense now. Got it, thanks.

Yep. It is a 9v 1000mA adapter.

I'll check one more thing today. I'll try to get an output from the USB and see if that hums too.

BTW, I unplugged various cables at times to see which one was causing the problem. Looks like the RC30 Out -> Receive is the issue. If I unplug this, the hum goes away. Going by scott-uk's explanation above, it seems logical.

I want you to know I suffered from the same buzzing noise. I read all of the descriptions I tried all of the solutions, with the exception of changing the amount of current that was coming through because I'm using a digital power adapter.

I found a solution and I don't think it's listed. When I heard the buzzing noise I had my input connected to the send and I had the return connected to the output... I think. Either way what's important to note is that on both set ups I was able to both hear and record with the pedal ( I was even able to record my guitar being placed directly into the amp) but once I switch them the buzzing went away. I made an account just to say that
