I just purchased a Mustang IV...and a Shure SM-57 microphone. I am mic'ing my amp...but I am really struggling with latency. I understand what it is...but just not quite getting that sweet spot. I use Reaper as my DAW...I also use an ART Project Series USB Mixer. Thanks in advance for your help!!

What drivers are you using to connect your mic/mixer to your PC? (I say 'PC' - I think the same general points apply for Macs) If you're using standard Windows drivers, you will get latency, for reasons discussed in many other topics here, eg FFXIhealer's response to this topic:

viewtopic.php?f=27&t=75874

Most people recommend using an ASIO driver to reduce latency, again the reasons why this has less latency are also covered in the above topic.

I could also suggest using USB directly from the amp to the PC, with Fender's ASIO driver, and bypass the mic/mixer entirely. With the Mustang's cab modelling that should give realistic sounds - although I understand if you want the 'live' sound from mic'ing a real speaker. But it might be worth testing with this just to see if that reduces your latency - it would at least help identify the culprit.

That's on the recording side. The other source of latency is delays in the sound output from your PC. That's entirely down to your PC's sound card and its drivers etc.

Also, the overall processing power and specific components in the PC could affect this. Generally, the newest, fastest thing you can lay your hands on will be best, but any reasonably up-to-date PC should work acceptably. It's not something I've looked into in detail, I'm sure others can make more specific suggestions.

I am using the ASIO4ALL as my driver. As far as my inputs...I am using the Mustang...and outputs...I am using the mixer's USB Audio Codec. Thanks again!!

I'm now confused; you said you were mic'ing the amp, so the Mustang isn't the "input" to your PC. I was assuming the mic was connected to your USB mixer - so that mixer is providing USB audio input to your PC. Is that right?

I'd reiterate my earlier suggestion to at least try the Mustang's direct USB connection to the PC - even if that isn't the final setup you want, it's a useful test to diagnose where the latency is being introduced.

Are you saying your DAW (Reaper) is sending the sound output back to your mixer, and then you have some amp/speakers/whatever connected to that to listen to the sound? Or if not, how are you hearing the sound? (I'm assuming the latency is the difference between what you play and what you hear?)

If you are using the USB mixer for both input and output simultaneously (I didn't even know there were any USB mixers that could do both simultaneously), then it doesn't surprise me you have latency. I don't know anything about your mixer specifically, but if it's doing twice as much work as I'd normally expect it to, it could well suffer delays.

I suggest another test (again, not necessarily your preferred setup but useful for troubleshooting): use your PC's sound card for the sound output and see if that reduces the latency compared to going back out via the USB mixer.

Hi Aceman67,

I see that our Forum member scott-uk has been discussing this issue with you here. Thanks to him. It sounds like you may need to adjust the buffer settings in Reaper. If you like, please feel free to contact us directly for some additional support on the set up of your recording input with your amp. Thanks.
