When I run the Mustang Floor direct to monitor or PA is dead quiet. Same when I plug it into the effect return of my Peavey Classic 30. But when I try to run it in front of the same amp, there's a noticeable and constant noise. :(

I've tried with the different output options, different cables, nothing activated (all blocks off), even with no guitar plugged, different levels on amp and/or on Mustang, and nothing changes, same noise in the background. As soon as I plug the cable from Mustang to Peavey's input, the hiss begins. No success with Mustang's noise gate, useless for this. :?

It can't be ground loop noise because, as I've just stated, there's no noise when running it into effects return. I'd like to use it straight into amp's input so I can use Peavey's preamp.

Any thoughts/advices/experiences on this? Thanks!

When you use the amp's fx return, the amp's pre-amp is no longer part of the signal chain.

When you plug in to the normal input to the amp, the amp's pre-amp is now in the signal chain.

This is the only difference between the two configurations. All the other tests you've done eliminate the M-Floor or anything upstream of that as the source of the hiss.

Ergo, sounds to me as though the hiss is coming from the amp's pre-amp.

One way to check this: If you plug your guitar directly into the amp, thus bypassing the M-Floor, do you get hiss?

Another thing you could try is a different (and best quality you have) cable between the M-Floor and the amp. It's possible the cable is faulty or picking up noise that the amp's pre-amp is amplifying to an audible level. I think this less likely, but worth trying.

Hi pomfret,

This behavior would be expected when bringing a line level source into a high gain input such as the instrument input on your amp. You may want to check to make sure that you have amp modeling bypassed on your Fender Mustang Floor and that you adjust the output level control on the back panel of the Mustang Floor to balance the output to minimize the noise on input. With amp modeling bypassed, you should not find that Mustang Floor particularly more noisy than the guitar input itself, with modeling bypassed.

Please check these items out, and let us know if we can assist further.

You're right, scott-uk, it seems obvious but I didn't think about it. Preamp is the culprit. :(

The weird thing is that with guitar plugged directly, there's a little bit of noise, but not too much. That noise increases exponentially with the Mustang Floor between guitar and preamp. Not Mustang's fault, but it's weird.

I've tried different (all good) cables, bypass Mustang's amp block (and effects blocks as well), adjusted Mustang's and Peavey's levels, and doesn't get better, so I guess the cause is clear. Preamp and poweramp valves are new, so it may be something more serious.

Thank you both for helping me, now my Peavey must go to see the doctor... :?
