Two recent discussions here (Windows doesn't see Mustang as an audio input device, with either FUSE or ASIO drivers; FUSE driver installation is confused by presence of non-Mustang audio devices) prompt the following question:

When one installs FUSE and the USB drivers to let FUSE connect to the amp, the drivers appear in (Windows) Device Manager as a "Sound Device." Why is this, when it isn't a "sound device" at all?

OK, so the amp on its own is obviously a piece of audio equipment. But its connection to FUSE is purely data: there's no way to send sound to or from the amp using these drivers. From the computer's point of view, it isn't a sound device at all.

By calling it a "sound device" that seems to confuse Windows and/or FUSE and its driver installation if other genuine sound devices are present. So there seems to be complexity and problems for no benefit.

Either make it a proper "sound device" so that the standard USB drivers can be used to receive audio from the amp (ASIO driver notwithstanding - yes I know there are other reasons to prefer that in some/most cases), so that it looks like a normal audio input device to the computer. (I won't get into the question of sending audio to the amp over USB, I know that's a different topic).

Or stop treating it as a "sound device" and thus get rid of all the problems with driver installation, etc.

Can anyone from Fender offer any explanation for this please?

(replying to my own question, for the benefit of anyone else reading this)

It turns out the answer is that the Mustang/FUSE USB drivers can be used for audio, so it is a "sound device" after all. It's just that (a) everyone, Fender included, recommends using the ASIO driver instead for reduced latency etc; and (b) by default Windows disables the USB driver as an audio device, as explained by Ben from Fender here:

Hi scott-uk,

We do recommend using the Fender Universal ASIO driver when using DAW software such as Ableton Live Lite Fender Edition software. As you point out, the ASIO driver is not needed when using the Fender FUSE software. And a big thank you to Ben for his detailed information on audio setup for the Windows OS. Please let us know if we can assist with anything else.

Cheers,

Alan
