Windows 7. I've installed the ASIO driver. I also have FUSE installed and that all works fine. I can see the USB drivers etc in Device Manager, both under Sound ("Mustang Amplifier") and USB ("Composite USB Device"). I haven't (yet) installed Ableton etc, deliberately for the purpose of this test.

At this point, I don't see the ASIO driver, or the amp, or anything, as an available recording device anywhere in Windows. Nowhere in Device Manager, Sounds, Recording Devices, etc, etc. It doesn't seem possible to select the amp as a sound input for any "standard" Windows application.

Is that correct? Is Windows completely oblivious to ASIO? Is it only specifically ASIO-enabled applications, such as Ableton etc, that can "see" the ASIO driver and use the amp's USB sound input?

Or am I missing something really obvious? (For example: is it possible to record sound from the amp using Windows Sound Recorder? Yes I know that's a primitive program and isn't a very good way to record sound, this is just for my understanding of how this all works).

Yep, Windows is pretty oblivious to ASIO devices.

Usually it'll find some sort of generic USB audio or something it can use as an input, but ASIO is generally the realm of dedicated audio software. I've not used a Mustang as an audio input, but it'll probably be there for Windows somewhere, even if it's just labelled as some sort of generic USB input device.

yep that is correct. ASIO are kind of crazy drivers and Windows per se do no recognize the equipment connected behind an ASIO driver as sound equipment.
That is the reason I can not use Audacity (superb and FREE recording program) to record directly from the Mustang amp, as Audacity do not support ASIO devices either :(

When you install and then launch Ableton (or any other ASIO compatible software, as the Mobius looper, also superb and FREE) Ableton itself will load the ASIO driver (you will get the ASIO icon on the system tray) and then you can adjust ASIO parameters from there.
In addition you are going to almost certainly adjust USB audio level using FUSE or the signal output from the mustang would be too low in almost all cases.

An alternative option would be to use a audio jack to USB cable converter, and connect it to the effects send of the Mustang amp. It uses regular Windows drivers and will work with any software.

ASIO stands for Audio Stream Input/Output. It's a driver that directly interfaces with your music hardware, completely BYPASSING Windows. That's why Windows doesn't like or see ASIO. When you tell your software to use ASIO to connect to the instruments, you're telling that program to give Windows's Audio Drivers the finger.

It's good, because Windows's standard audio drivers adds a level of latency and processing that gives you unwanted delays between what you play/record and what you actually hear. With ASIO running instead, your sound goes straight to your software and the sound chip. The latency pretty much disappears for me. That's why I use it.

Hello scott-uk and All,

Please try this to enable non-ASIO audio recording within Windows7:

Go to Sound in the Control Panel
Switch to the Recording panel
Right-click within the dialog box and select Show Disabled Devices

At this point you should see Mustang Amplifier listed as one of the recording devices as an Internal AUX Jack (assuming you have it plugged in). Right-click on it and select Enable.

After the enable, you should be able to use the Mustang Amplifier within Windows apps like Sound Recorder and Audacity (albeit with "Windows latency").

(And no, I'm not sure why Windows defaults it initially to disabled.)

Hope this helps -Ben
