Just wondering...

I, like most, have noise pollution issues when it comes to turning up the volume on my Mustang V (love it!!!), so I have resorted, reluctantly, to go the way of using headphones. The problem is that I play live, usually at church, and the tones that I create sound totally different. I understand that there are differences in sound when you move from one venue to another, but the differences are sometimes extreme.

The headphones that I am currently using are Vertex by ifrogz. Are there better phones that would give me a closer reproduction of the actual sound? I've heard that I should be using earbuds, or do I just need to suck it up and deal with it? I'm not looking to spend a huge amount of cash, but I'm willing to go up around $100...

Any suggestions?

Hi dhguitarro,

Thanks for your inquiry. So, at the $100 level, it may be a bit tricky to get truly "neutral" headphones. But I would suggest going to your local pro audio, music or related store that carries as wide a selection of headphones as possible and bringing a good quality audio file or two with you (wav or high quality mp3) and audition the various headphones with audio/music that you are very familiar with on all the phones. This would be a reasonable way to determine what might be the most neutral sound. I hope this helps. Please let us know if we can assist further.

The absolute best bang for the buck is Sony's MDR 7506's. And, they're durable too. I sat down hard on them and it sounded like they were munched, bad. But, the modular pieces simply came undone and I put them back together with no problems! And, what's really cool is the Sony brand replacement pads, cord, and gold 1/8" jack are readily available and cheap.

I find that headphones never sound the same as the real speaker, even with good cab simulation. The guitar amp speaker seems to be an inherent part of creating the sound. Plus the way the sound reaches the ear from a real speaker is different to headphones. So I don't think one can ever get exactly the same sound, it's a case of getting "close enough."

Personally, I wouldn't go for ear-buds. They're increasingly good these days, and may suit the compressed / processed sounds of commercial recordings. However, for guitar use I find I can't beat a good set of full over-ear headphones. I'm afraid I can't give a specific recommendation, as I use some Sennheisers that are long-since discontinued, but as a brand I'd suggest checking them out.
