I have a Korg EXP-2 and before I go insane trying every permutation, will this ever work with the Mustang III? Will only the Fender EXP1 work?

I'm surprised anyone would even consider that it might work. They're both digital pedals, that use a proprietary data protocol to communicate with the devices they're connected to.

I suppose it's always possible that Korg and Fender have collaborated and use the same protocol. I suspect it's far more likely that they're completely different.

So if the Korg EXP-2 works with a Fender Mustang amp it would be an unlikely and fortuitous coincidence.

If you try it, I suspect at best nothing will happen, at worst you'll bust the amp and pedal.

Expression pedals, like volume pedals, aren't digital in general. They send out the input voltage lowered, I believe.

There are difference, though, which sometimes make them incompatible. Quite sad, considering it's a very basic device, but it's more profitable to make multiple minor variants than a single version you can tweak as needed.

I don't know about the Korg EXP-2.

The EXP-2 is a pretty standard expression pedal that will work with 99% of things. Expression pedals are as a rule pretty compatible across manufacturers, as there are only so many ways you can wire up what is essentially just a foot-wobbled potentiometer. A quick heel down/heel up calibration, and bingo.

Apparently not the Mustang though, as from what I can see they use some form of digital jiggery pokery in the equation to enable the whole dual mode thing via a mono 1/4" cable.

That's because the FUSE EXP-1 pedal is designed to send digital instructions into the Mustang's DSP chip. Whatever the EXP-1 has been set to work on within FUSE is what will get edited.

The Korg EXP-2 was designed to do something similar with KORG music equipment. And the last time I checked, Korg keyboards don't run Fender's DSP chip software.

Beg your pardon. Was it really THAT dumb of a question? It's not apparent what kind of protocol is used for either, so I thought it was a perfectly reasonable question. They're both expression pedals built for digital effects processors.
I'm smart enough to figure out that sending data to an amp is highly unlikely to 'bust' anything.

Thanks Vulpinity, that was the assumption I was working with. There are some standards in data transmission (MIDI is quite widely used...) so I thought some basic experience and extrapolating would mean there was a slight possibility it may work!

Thanks FFX and mpr. I suppose they want to sell me another pedal. Good job I have a Cry Baby and Ernie Ball Volume to keep my feet happy!

Anyway, I asked, and now I know I don't have to experiment any further.

I wasn't criticising the question or questioner. It was merely an expression to accentuate the unlikelihood of the two items working together. If that didn't come across then I can only apologise.

Agree. I was merely mentioning the possibility. A realistic example is if one component uses 12v and the other uses 3.3v. If the latter receives 12v it might cause damage to sensitive electronics. I don't know if that's the case in this situation, but personally I'd be cautious about interconnecting things I didn't know definitely to be compatible.

Indeed yes. I agree it would be great if every manufacturer used MIDI for all control switching, it would make our lives a lot easier. But then they wouldn't be able to charge us more £££/$$$ to buy their proprietary product...
