I have the mustang III. When I first got it, the distortion was a bit too twang for my taste, even on the metal2000 patch. So I added a sonic maximizer and it got better but its still not as high gain as I prefer. I tried a boss metal core distortion pedal but it was just way too overpowering. Any suggestions on how I can get some more high gain but not too much?

Blimey, I find the "90s" and "2000" amp models when cranked-up to be far too high gain to be usable, I didn't realise anyone might want anything higher-gain than that!

Are you sure you have the amp gain etc turned up to 10? What if you also add an overdrive or fuzz 'stomp' effect to the preset too, is that still not enough gain?

Or maybe we should clarify: what type of sound exactly do you mean by high-gain? I'm intrigued that on the one hand the amp isn't high enough for you, but a dedicated overdrive pedal is "too overpowering" - so is there some subtlety of effect you're looking for other than straightforward overdrive/gain?

I would also try changing the cabinet models, that may make a difference in getting some higher gain from your mustang.

Hi jamesdolecek,If you are using the Fuse Software, maybe adding Post Gain would get the sound your after. Plus changing the speaker cabinet with different speakers makes a dramatic change, as Metalman50 mentioned here.
Good Luck, I'm sure the sound your after is in there.

thanks guys I will boot up fuse and try that, also adding cabs and od/fuse. I will say this adding a BBE Sonic stomp makes my amp go from great to unbelievably fantastic
