Hi,

I've been searching the forums for some time now, but I get too many hits without a definitive answer... :

Can I use the Mustang II with a bass guitar ?

I actually don't know anything about guitars, bought one (FSR charcoal black HSH) and want to just fiddle around a bit with a bass too. I'm in an appartment, am not playing loud, just want to hear some sound.
I assumed that since the Bassman is one of the amps in the Mustang, I could..... But is this correct?

If not, is there another 'hybrid' amp that can (a G-DEC maybe) ?

Edit: I am planning on a passive bass guitar, not active (in case it makes a difference)

Thank you.

Fender's official position appears to be that playing bass through any amp that is not designated for that use voids the warranty of that amp.

Logically, the smaller the amp and especially the speaker, the more likelihood there is that damage could occur. Bass amp chassis's, circuitry and speakers are designed to cope with the lower frequencies.

At low volume, you might well be fine with a bass through the Mustang II, but you do need to be aware of the possible consequences of using it that way, both for the amp and your warranty.

Ok, plan B then :

A Fender Mustang V head, a Bass head, and just one (1) speakercabinet.... Will that pass the test ?

Would it make a difference in sound if I take a bass speaker cabinet and hook it to the mustang (with considering wattage and the frequency range ofcourse.. ) ?

Yes, it will sound different. Bass speakers and cabs are voiced differently. Cone material is somewhat different as well.

Hi Guys,

As drpietrzak is saying, this amp is simply not designed for bass. So using it as a bass amp can void your warranty. If you are recording, you might look into a low cost audio interface with instrument inputs. Thanks.

It's ironic, but we're at opposite ends of the spectrum. I'm running a Squier CV Tele through a Bronco 40 right now and the Bassman model actually sounds pretty good. I bought the amp for my bass, but am still in the midst of looking for a guitar amp. Believe what these guys have told ya so far, cranking up your bass through your Mustang amp (or any guitar amp for that matter) is like playing Russian Roulette with your equipment. Not advised.

Hi iabssplyr,

Thanks for your input here. This is a good contrast too. :)

Someone posted here a couple of years ago that they were successfully using a Mustang amp with a bass guitar.

Whereas obviously Fender's advice not to do this takes priority, I mention it in case you want to try and contact that person to check their experience over the time since then...

Or...you could just GET a Bronco 40 and be done with. Your FUSE install will already work with it and it's a dedicated Bass amp with a bunch of Bass amp models.

Thanks everyone for the input. My main reason for wanting only one amp is space, not money (hence question about 2 heads and one cabinet). I guess I will buy a Bronco to sit next to my Mustang :)

Hoping to find advice to get my bass set best on my Mustang II. V2 i only found cons...
"in no case plugging in a bass-guitar or your amp will fall in pieces",
"Guitar-amps are completely different to bass-amps and will furnish all falsified tone"
"You'll lose warranty when plug in a bass" (this one i like best!) a.s.o.

Well i do practice bass on my guitar-amps for decades (mostly 12"era), perhaps with a little lack of cab's volume but still all usable to me.

I bought the Mustang II. exactly for this purposes: practicing bass and guitar, some home-jam with friends and scholars and having effects on the fly... it's now for more than a year and nothing happened.

My actual setting (with Steinberger L2/5, XL25W & Warwick Streamer 5):
British Green
Gain: 2
Master: 4
Treble: 1.5
Bass: 6
Effects: Off

This gives me well dosed base for my gear (hello neighbors). The basses sound all quite different, even the two Bergers.
The L has plenty of low mids, the XL is a true bass-monster while the wooden Streamer is more of noble restraint, punchy still though.
So if any of you have figured out other settings (or any problems perhaps), let me please know.

Hi the chef!,

We do not recommend using your Fender® Mustang™ amp with a bass guitar. It is not designed for that application. If you choose to use it for a bass, it may work at low volumes. The problem is that it is not designed for the frequency range of a bass. Therefore, the gain stages, power section and cabinet are simply not set up to accommodate bass guitar. If your amp does sustain damage as a result of use with a bass guitar, it would not be covered by the limited warranty.

We have a very cool Fender FUSE™- compatible bass amp called Bronco™ 40. I have included a link for it here in case you may want to check it out. Please let us know if we can assist further.

Best Regards,

1. I never use those amps at high volume (the Mustang II. isn't cool at loud even for guitars!). :?

2. I know they force you to say that and if your boss catches you to tell us that up to medium loud the amp does pretty cool you're rid of your job...

2.a) I do not trust too much in 10" speaker for 5-string gear... and cab-volume is rather small too, so were's headroom to build 30Hz low waves? :?:

2.b) Your demo-player avoids the 5th string and i don't believe that the recording is outta speaker but inline to a desk as modeled signal... i can do that with my iPhone!

I use the bass sometimes through the mustang, but dial a bass tone that's not to deep and thick if you dont wanna break the speaker.
