I've had a couple of opportunities to play out with the Mustang III and am largely happy with the results. However, I'm finding the Marshall 1987, err, British 70s to be very thin sounding on the upper strings. My primary axe is a PRS Custom 24, which sounds very full through a tube amp (Mesa Express 5:25) and through the Mustang's Fender Twin simulation.

Marshall's been a different story. I tried all three 4x12 speaker models - settling on the G12V - and backed the treble down to about 8 O'Clock. This seemed to help a lot, but the B and high E still come across noticeably "wimpy" and lack sustain. I tried greatly increasing the preamp gain, but this just added what I'd describe as a harsh "spitting" sound to the notes. It almost sounds like digital sampling glitches.

Conversely, I'm quite happy with the sound on the bottom end.

Would appreciate some suggestions from other users - thanks!

Mess with sag and bias. Also blend. Search the Dale presets for Plexi 2 and when trying it roll off tone and volume on the guitar. dale Plexi gain is another to try.

I spent some time yesterday playing with settings and traced the "tinny" sound down to the speaker cabinet simulation. All of the 4x12 variations have too much comb-filter effect, IMHO. Granted that part of the Marshall stack sound is phase interference between speakers, but I think the algorithm used in the Mustang III picked an unfortunate point in space to model and has prominent notches in the frequency region I associate with "body" and "fullness". Switching to 'SS12' is getting a sound that's far more useable for live performance. I can now run the treble control back up to a reasonable point and get some serious crunch into the high strings without sounding thin.

The 4x12 models may be quite reasonable for recording, but I haven't used the amp for that purpose yet.

Wish list item: If there is horsepower left in the DSP and room for the code in flash memory, please consider a "virtual angle" knob for the multi-speaker simulations. This would have same effect as a listener walking from side to side in front of the physical cabinet to find the most pleasing phase interaction.

Whooo, what a dramatic change to the sound of plexi-model !
I tried it with a preset named "Dr Z Rough Blues" from the library.

Exactly the "tinny" sound that you described in your OP was the reason I couldn't be a friend of the Marshall models.

Have you also tried the No-Cab possibility? Not really bad ...

Right, but it's the speaker simulation that makes things tinny - not the amp. Try playing with the British 70s amp using the SS12 speaker and I think you'll find it's a whole different story.
