Hi, I'd really appreciate some hints from experienced amp 'tweakers'...

I find with my Mustang (MIV) overall that the sound is too boomy/bassy, with the high frequencies thin or muffled.

If I turn up the mid/treble, then it still doesn't sound even; it just sounds like a boomy amp with an over-boosted treble to compensate.

I'm using mainly the "British 60s" and "65 Twin Reverb" amp models, with a bit of gain and reverb, and no other effects. Guitar is an LP with twin humbuckers that sounds fine (in terms of evenness of frequency response) through other amps. I've tried a different guitar (also with double coil pups) in case that affects it, but no difference. I've also tried the LP in single-coil mode to no avail. I don't have a genuine single coil guitar to see what effect that has (but then, I don't want that single-coil sound!).

I'm sure there's nothing wrong with the amp, all the frequencies are there, just not in a good balance. My assumption is that it's user error. Anyone's suggestions for the best way to set it up for an even response across the range - neither too boomy in the bass, nor overly jangly in the treble, would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
Scott

Have you tried experimenting with different speaker cab models?

Have you tried turning Off the Cab Sims? Mind you, this will only work if you're not using the headphone out or doing any recording using the amp as the audio interface.

Hi scott-uk,

Subtractive EQ is always an option to experiment with. Rather than adding Treble, try bringing down the Bass and/or Mid and see if that helps. Also, I don't know if we are talking about usage in a specific room or location or use in a variety of locations, But if it is one room or location, you might consider how the space is affecting the amp's sound. I hope these ideas may help. Please let us know how it is going.

I have a feeling that there is nothing wrong with your amp, but as an experienced musician, it may be the physical location of the amp. Is it in a corner, or on the floor near against a wall? Low frequencies get boosted by putting the speaker near the corner of a wall, and boosted a lot if placed in a corner. Try moving the amp away from a corner, or even getting it off the floor a bit. A 2-12 cabinet puts out a lot of bass frequencies, so moving it to a different location will probably smooth out the response. After that, try different cabinet models to get the sound you're looking for. I hope this helps.

Moving the amp might help. But I tend to agree with Alan, you probably just need to spend some time EQing. What I usually do is start by putting the bass, middle and treble all at 5. Then one by one adjust up or down to what sounds good.

Thank you very much for the suggestions, I will try all of these. Yes the amp is on the floor. I was thinking of trying a tilt-back amp stand, partly to get it off the floor and partly so that the more directional higher frequencies make it to my ears rather than my knees :)
