Hey, I'm a new user of the Mustang floorboard and had a question regarding setting it up with the Mustang III amp - is the amp preset being used with the floorboard supposed to be the same and/or displayed on the Mustang amp? To put the question in context, whenever I select a clean preset (i.e. Johnny Marr clean) on the board, should the display on the amp show the same preset as being selected?
It seems that if I'm playing one preset on the floorboard that the different amp preset being displayed is being played with it. Whenever I try and play a clean channel, for instance, and the amp is showing 'liquid solo', it sounds like both presets are being played. I have my guitar plugged into the board's input, with a chord running from the left unbalanced out to the amp input like the manual shows.
Thanks for the help.

I would try the mp3/aux input on your mustang III with your mustang floorboard, this should give you a better tone from your floorboard because it bypasses the mustang's III preamp and amp modeling section and sends your signal through the mustang's main power amp section.

I would also like to see fender and other companys who make modeling amps put in a direct to power amp 1/4" guitar input jack that also bypasses the amp modeling section but can add some features such as a 3 band EQ and input gain level control, these features would help you better control external stompboxes and other guitar amp modeling processors that you may want to play through your mustang amp.

Hi Guys,

The Aux in definitely can be used. Also, the Effects return can be used and will act as a line level power amp input. It is post, and can be more convenient then the Aux for this use. Please let us know if we can assist further.

I should have also mentioned about the effects return,i guess i did not have my thinking cap on! I know my mustang V has the effects send return loop but at the time of my first post i was not 100% sure about the mustang III having the effects loop but i now remember that it does have it.

There is no 'intelligent' link between the Mustang Floor and a Mustang amp. They function as two completely independent devices. If you change the preset on the Floor, that will only change the Floor. The amp will stay with whatever it had before. Or put another way, you can't use a Mustang Floor to control a Mustang amp.

So yes, as you observe: if you have different presets on the Floor and amp, you'll likely get an unpleasant tone, as you have two full sets of end-to-end modelling and effects going on. Even if you have both set to the same preset, it's probably not going to sound right as you're applying the same effects twice over.

As others have observed, if you're using the Floor (or any other modelling pre-amp), you'll want to bypass the modelling in the amp and go straight to the power amp, hence using the FX return as your input, not the guitar input.

But that means of course you don't need a modelling amp like the Mustang; a plain FRFR amp or powered monitor is the right thing to use. Or the fx return of a "normal" (non-modelling) amp would also work, if you want the colouration of that amp's power section and speakers. In that case of course you may want to turn off the cab simulation in the Mustang Floor.

I won't go into the "4 cable method" as that doesn't work with the Mustang Floor (it's effects loop is in the wrong place in the signal chain), but I mention it as that's another way of combining some modelling pre-amps with a conventional guitar amplifier. Even if you don't use it, I'd suggest reading how it works, as understanding the principle is good (well, it helped me!) for understanding how and why certain things are best in different parts of the signal chain.

Hi scott-uk,

I would like to suggest that you try bypassing the modeling on your Mustang Floor and take an output from it and go into the effects return on your Mustang III. Press the Amp button on your Mustang Floor to bypass. And use the Mustang Floor as a dedicated effects unit and expression pedal and use the Mustang III as the modeling engine. Or, you can take the output from the Floor and go to the guitar input on your amp. In that case, bring the output level knob (rear panel) on the Floor down and increase the level slowly until you have the output level you need to the amp's guitar input.

In closing, I would say that it is not so much a question of a "right" or "wrong" way to connect the Mustang Floor to an external device, but more a matter of personal preference and needs. Please let us know if we can assist further.
