Is any one besides me having issues with the Mustang III 4 button footswitch seeing the LED's, patch number and what effect is on when playing outdoors in bright light. It becomes useless if I can't see what I am doing so last week I ended up using my Super-Sonic 22 and pedalboard which is a lot more work hauling to gigs and the main reason I bought the Mustang III. Any ideas or thought on how to make the LED's more visible is welcome.

Thanks,

Leo

Hi Leo:

I certainly can relate to your problem viewing the LED's on your 4 button footswitch (which I too have).

I don't know if I can be of any use in this matter, but, as a former TV camera operator, I can only say that this type of problem plagues a great deal of displays when outdoors.

It has been said that the new iPhone 5 display no longer has the sensor which had some compensation for outdoors' display (apparently, according to Apple, it was one of the things dropped for sake of thinness). For myself, I've longed for an LED display, like the old cellphones, to accompany the liquid and/or light displays now in use. They simply worked in sunshine.

For my camera viewfinder we had 3 and/or 4 sided shields, and we often made cardboard (art card works well), wooden, or tin tops and sides for video monitors. Camera lenses also use similar hoods. It should be noted that these were for otherwise bright displays!

Perhaps, the short term answer may be to make a Rube Goldberg three sided box which would allow you to see your display. You may be able to enclose the pedal or just the display with as little as gaffers/duct tape and cardboard, or a pair of tinsnips could come in handy. Best to have the colour black.

Self made labeling (masking tape or whatever) is common to pro setups.

I know this isn't a long term answer, Leo; but, sometimes the long term answer is in the distance.

Maybe it's time, although unlikely, for an accessory display that is larger, and it may be cool to have some sort of programmability . . . just sayin'.

Best of luck.

Note: My eyes are getting older and feable so I decided on using the LCD display on the top of my Mustang IV rather than the display on the superb Mustang Floor that would have been about 6 feet from my vision. Even the brightness wouldn't have helped me here, not to mention the all but useless miniature displays on many of the keyboards out there.

I've had that problem with several pedals. Only thing I could ever think to do (as suggested above) is build something around it that creates a shadow over the display. Let us know if you think of something better!

Thanks, that is what I had to do. I made a 3 sided box that covers the pedal. It works for the most part and people get really curious about what the heck is under the box......LOL. It's funny watching people trying to get behind me to see what is in the box.....Some type of special MOJO.

Glad to see your KISS solution worked, Leo. Perhaps, strings10927, you, and I could produce a variety of funky coloured shades for the gearheads in Guitarland. Great comment on keeping the secret hidden from the curious. ROTFL

Incidentally, I once saw a similar, although larger, collapsable (wind) shield for a camp stove. Don't know how useful that would be . . . but, just imagine the fun keeping the crowd in suspense.
