I just started using Fuse, so it may be a noob issue...

I updated the firmware on my Mustang III. I downloaded a patch from the Fender website. I altered it on my iMac. Sonic perfection, almost. I saved it via the computer interface. I wanted to make sure it "stuck", so I switched patches. What I got was a different amp and changed bass, mids, treble, etc. Not what I saved. Also, now every patch I switch to gives me an * by its name after it starts up. The patch values and timbre are different than original for every patch. I am not sure what is going on. Help!? TIA.

You ....altered it? Is that a typo? Installed it perhaps?

No, no typo at all. I altered the patch, the sound settings, sonic algorithm, etc.: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthesizer#Patch. Fender uses the terminology "preset" for a patch, though this has traditionally been used for many years to denote a patch that is a "factory preset".

The MIII is more synthesizer than traditional guitar amp.

I'll restate my original post so there is no confusion. I downloaded the firmware update. I downloaded a user submitted preset from the Fender Fuse site. I altered the parameters of the user submitted preset and saved it in Fuse via my iMac. I then changed to another preset and changed back to the user submitted preset that I had altered to my taste. It did not sound the same as before changing out of the preset to another and back again. The preset did not get saved. Also, now all of my presets present with an * next to their name within a few seconds of switching to them. For example, one of the Johnny Marr patches will have an * next to its name within a few seconds of choosing the preset either via computer or the top panel of the MIII.

sorry, entirely my confusion, for some reason I translated 'patch' to 'firmware'. I think I need to get more sleep.

Are you sure you didn't just save the patch to your iMac but not to the amp? The Fuse interface is a little murky about this. It works well enough once you figure out where everything is but at first glance, the interface is a train wreck. There's no cohesiveness in its design and some of the placement of its controls feel, well, arbitrary.

O.

A clarifying question:

OK, so you used Fuse to transfer the patch from your computer to the amp, yes?

Possibly the transfer of the patch to your amp didn't work correctly, leaving your amp in an inconsistent state. Try resetting the amp and doing it again. Or as other posts suggest, in the nicest possible way could there be user error in the way the transfer was done? Again, resetting the amp and starting over may be the best thing to do here. (I assume that everyone always takes a full backup of their amp settings with Fuse before changing anything... )

Did you use Fuse to edit the patch on your computer, or did you use some other tool? I ask as I don't recall seeing anything in Fuse for editing the "sonic algorithm."

If you used some other tool to edit the patch, then it doesn't surprise me that your amp is now confused. You may well have changed some parameter of the patch in a way that isn't supported by the amp's firmware. Maybe the patch files are in some industry-standard format that can be edited with other tools, but it doesn't mean Fender have implemented every part of that standard. Just a thought. So I'd recommend only editing patches with Fuse; it may not let you change every low-level parameter of the sound, but it will mean the resultant patch works on the amp.

I used Fuse to edit the downloaded preset. I hit save on Fuse on my iMac. I will try to reset the amp and start over. I'm pretty much sure this is all user error on my part. I'm just lookin' to fix it. :)

Thanks for the advice.
