I heard from a music store salesman that the Fender Mustang series has dealt a serious blow to Line 6's sales. I wouldn't know how to verify this but it wouldn't surprise me if it's true.

I think different manufacturers and products constantly leap-frog each other. The Line 6 "Spider IV" series (I guess that's the amp range being compared to the Mustang for sales volumes) has been around for quite a while. Amp modelling and amp interfaces have moved on since then. Indeed, reviewers in UK now say that the Spider amps are looking out-of-date compared to more recent products from competitors. At the moment, Fender have hit the 'sweet spot' with the Mustang. Maybe in a year or so Line 6 will bring out a "Spider HD" (or whatever...) with the latest models and interface, and things will swing back in their favour. Then Fender will bring out an updated Mustang, and so on.
