I got a Mustang III amplifier this past Christmas. It was working well at purchase and for the first few months.

Curiously, I have noticed recently that some presets (the basics and any other preset with the "base" being one of the basics) really have no volume come out of the amplifier when playing is attempted (and hardly any with the "Master" volume turned quite high).

Most noticably, things using '65 Twin, '65 Deluxe, Princeton, and '57 Deluxe are very difficult to hear unless "Master" is turned nearly all the way up. It is a HUGE difference compared to what it used to be, the tones are not crisp, are indistinct, and there is a buzz in the background of all of them.

When turned to say "Super-Sonic" or "Metal 2000" things seem preserved. And obviously, with "Master" turned as high as it was to squeeze any amount of decibels from the amp, it would be ear-splitting if not turned down (a MARKED difference between the presets and their volumes).

I have reset to factory settings a few times as per the manual. I have updated the firmware. I have attempted to use two different guitars as well as different cords with the same results throughout. The presets are all at factory settings, the volumes are not diminished in any way, and the Master is not too low. There are clear distinct problems associated with a few of the basic presets on my amplifier.

I am left thinking it is the amplifer but I have no idea why it happened, how to otherwise "Reset" the amp, and am wondering if anyone else has had this happen, if it's truly defective, or if I should have it checked out by Fender, go to a store, get it replaced, etc. It's frustrating.

I'd appreciate any input. Thank you.

Very strange. If some presets have their usual volume it cannot be a question of hardware of the poweramp section. If a factory reset doesnt help it cannot be a question of corrupt fuse-files on your computer.
What came to my mind immediatly when I saw your list of affected amp-models ('65 Twin, '65 Deluxe, Princeton, and '57 Deluxe ) is, that they have one thing in common: they dont have a virtual master-volume knob in the advanced setting of Fuse.
I guess there's some defect IC in your amp, not processing the information correctly ...

Can't you go back to the shop, compare the factory-presets with another MIII and change it if it clearly shows the lack of volume?

I agree, very strange. By chance, do you have an EXP-1 pedal connected and in the heel position? If not, is your gain knob functioning properly?

I have found with all such modeling type amps or floor pedals I have tried that I tended to end up with my custom presets having a higher volume than the default presets. After I had my presets pretty well dialed in on the M3, I only use 3 at the most for each guitar and at gigs or rehearsal , I went back and compared them to the basic model and set the level to match it. Found had more control and better tone on all of them.

And the M3 is the ONLY such modeling I have ever bonded with and trust me I have bonded with it.

Hi Vince,

I wanted to follow up with you to double check on the EXP-1 question from our engineer Ben. Do you have one of these pedals? If so, please let us know. We are happy to assist in any way we can. As Stinger22 commented, you may find that you will want to go through some of these Presets, particularly the ones that you are referring to here and adjust the channel volume and Save. Thanks.

Thanks all for the comments.

I do not have any pedals connected to my Fender Mustang. It just seemed to "switch" to a lower volume for some of them out of the blue to me. (I do not do much tinkering with the presets as I liked a few of them without a need/urge to change things around).

It isn't profoundly annoying to me but is somewhat bizarre that it happened. At some point I suppose I could bring my amplifier to a distributor and compare my presets and actual volume produced to a model in the store (my wife purchased the model I have for me at Christmas from Musicians Friend (online))...

I have noticed too that switching between presets that some seem to have awfully low volume - it would be nice if all the presets had a normalized volume level so that you could change between presets without having to mess around with the guitar volume control each time.

Hi Guys,

The Presets on the Fender Mustang series amps are set up to be in the mid range of output in terms of overall level. With a lower output single coil pickup guitar for example, you will notice that the clean model Presets will appear lower in output then when you play them with a higher output guitar such as a guitar with humbucker pickups. The best thing to do in this case would be to manually go through your Presets and do a bit of leveling and save them this way.

Please let us kow if we can assist further.

Hi cynalus,

One other thought is that you may want to try to reproduce the specific behavior you are describing. So, when time allows, sit down with the amp and play through a variety of Presets repeatedly with out touching any of the knobs. See if the changes you hear are consistent as you repeat them. This should give you a better idea of how your amp is performing. Please let us know if we can assist further.
