Hi,
I received my EXP-1 expression pedal yesterday. Everything works fine. But, everytime I turn on my amp (mustang V head), the lights on the pedal doesn't turn on, neither green or red. The pedal works fine but no lights. The pedal is hooked up to the amp in the 4 buttons switch and the 4 buttons is connected to the pedal at the right place. I need to unplug both cables from the pedal, then connect the amp wire first, then the 4 buttons switch.
Is it normal or did I do something wrong  ???

Edit: if I unplug the cable right from the 4 buttons switch and then plug it back, the exp-1 light turn on.

thanks

I got the same problem, when I plug 4 switch pedal and the EXP-1 together, lights go crazy in both pedals. They switch to the right position, but the lights don't show it, and I get lost. I update the framework, and the problem remains... It must be a software failure.

People of Fender we need your help!.

Thanks.

Hi Guys,

I am happy to assist. Can I ask both of you to check a couple of things and report what you find? So, please try connecting your EXP-1 pedals after powering up the amps (both with and without the MS-4 pedals). See if the pedals behave correctly and the green light indicates Volume mode and the red indicates Expression mode as expected as well as the MS-4 working as expected when connected together. Then we can go from there. Thanks very much.

Thans Allan,
if I turn on the amp, with the exp-1 connected to the amp AND the MS4 switch connected to it, the MS4 switch works fine, and the expression pedal either. Except that the lights (green or red) do not turn on. If I turn on the amp, with only the exp-1 connected, I get the green light (or the red if I switch to expression mode). So if I connect the MS4 switch AFTER booting up the amp, everything works as expected.

- booting up the amp with MS4 + exp1 connected= no lights on the exp-1
- booting up the amp without MS4 and connecting it after= working ok

If you need more details, let me know.

Your help is appreciated!

Hi bigdee,

Thanks for reporting these details. It sounds like the EXP-1 is functioning for you even when you connect it (before powering the amp on) and the lights do not light. Is that correct? If so, can you please try to verify this by checking an expression mode control. Also, can you please try connecting the EXP-1 pedal before powering up to see if it lights when connected by itself? Thanks very much.

Cheers,

Hi Alan,
You're right. The exp-1 is functionning properly when turning on the amp with the 4 buttons switch unplugged. When both are plugged, I mean the 4 button switch daisy chained to the exp-1, the lights on on exp do not turn on. Right now I know it works while in volume mode, I'll report later if it works in expression mode in a preset which I have something set.

The only way to have it to behave properly right now is to unplug the 4 buttons switch before turning the amp on, and connect it after. It's no big deal if it's suppose to work that way, but I doubt it.

I forgot to mention that I also have the 2 buttons switch plugged behind the amp (in the right spot!). I don't know if it can influence anything. I will try unplugging it from the amp to make sure it's not interfering.

Thanks for your help.

Hi bigdee,

Thanks for the additional information. I will wait for your replay after you test the expression mode behavior with the EXP-1 and MS-4 connected and powered on with the amp. Thanks again. :)

Hi Alan,
here's the follow up.

- With only exp-1 connected to the amp, the lights are functionning as they should

- with the 4 buttons switch daisy chained to the exp-1, the lights do not come on, neither in volume or in expression mode, BUT the pedal is working properly switching from volume to expression, but without lights. The expression mode works as well as I can use the wah in presets that have it configured.

I noticed a code on the 4 buttons switch while booting the amp. The code displays for half a second and is something like u-1. I don't see this if the switch is hooked up directly to the amp.

So to resume, my exp-1 is working in all ways, except that there is no lights if I turn on the amp with the 4 buttons switch daisy chained.

I really hope there is no problem with hardware because it takes so long to get any gear here!
Thanks for your help.

Hi bigdee,

After some discussion here, we are wondering if you might have a Fender ULT-4 and not the correct Fender MS-4 pedal connected. Can you please take a look at your 4 button pedal and tell me if the pedal says "MS-4" at the top center? If it does not, then you have a ULT-4. That pedal is not designed for use with the Fender Mustang amps. Please check this out and we can go from there. Thanks.

Nope, that's the first thing I looked before posting.

That's the pedal that was packed with my Mustang V head and it really says MS4 on the top. All the cables I use are the ones that were bundle with the pedals.

Hi bigdee,

Thanks for the update. It should be the case that your pedal is either an MS-4 or could say u1 when powering up. But it should not be both. Can you please double check what the pedal says when powering up? The MS-4 should say u3. Can you please also confirm the part number (top right corner). Thanks again.

Sorry, it sure could be u-3, I will double check later, I'm at work right now and I'll confirm the part number at the same time.
Thanks for your help
