New to the forum and have two questions:

1. Should I get a Mustang II instead of III due to fizz issues, or is a Mustang III so much better even with the fizz?

2. Is the Mustang II loud enough for a room with 100 people along side acoustic drums (un mic'd), bass guitar, acoustic, and vocals?

Thanks,
Grayson

I've heard no such fizz in my amp, but then again I didn't try to dial that up. It seems anyone who claims to have an issue also has a recipe for dialing it up on the amp. What's the point of that?

If you want to use the clean settings in a band, you should really get the MIII. The cleans are not nearly as loud as the high gain settings so you really need the 100 solid state watts for the clean volume, especially if you're outdoors.

In a band the fizz is not going to be an issue at all for you. I gig with my MIII and we're just one guitar and two voices. You can only hear it on maybe two of the 130+ songs we do, and no one in the audience notices it. They're too busy talking to each other. It's like a small ding in your guitar--after a while you forget about it.

cormorant, do you have any live recordings so we can hear what that sounds like? I play clean a lot with my band and never heard it.

I agree, 100watts leaves some headroom for outdoor gigs, I played one recently and had my amp turned up to 5 which in a small to medium room is unbearably loud.

I don't have any live recordings, but it sounds exactly like the recordings that are already on the web, including YouTube. I mostly use the 65 Deluxe Reverb setting.

The fizz volume doesn't seem to change all that much when you adjust the amp's volume, so at performance levels the fizz is drowned out by normal guitar sounds. It starts becoming noticeable as you drop the amp's volume, and with the master volume at two the fizz on my amp is actually just about as loud as the note itself.

For people playing out or just playing at normal volumes, the fizz is a non-issue, but for someone trying to use the MIII at bedroom levels, it's going to be a real annoyance and they should have an MI or MII.

People are not making up the fizz just as an excuse to trash the Mustang--it's a real glitch that affects certain uses of the amp. I love my MIII but if Fender ever comes out with a fizz-free Mustang, I will ditch this one and get the new one, just so I can have a solid state amp that's perfect for any occasion.

I wasn't trying to say it was a made up problem, I just wanted to hear an example of what you stated "You can only hear it on maybe two of the 130+ songs we do".

If you can hear it at gig volume, surely it would show up on a recorder too. Just wondering what that sounds like, as I've not experienced this issue with my MIII.

I know the YouTube video you're talking about, but it sounds like a lab experiment to me. If you have to go to all that trouble to hear it, I just don't see the problem. But if it's present at gig volume and noticeable above 2 vocalists and a busy audience, that would be another story....

I have a Mustang II and I use it with an 8 piece horn band with a loud lead trumpet and drummer. As for the clean sounds not being loud enough, I use a compressor in Post mode to boost the output of a clean amp model and it's plenty loud. The compressor can also be set to very low compression settings so it's relatively transparent.

OK, full disclosure. My MII has a ridiculously efficient Eminence Cannabis Rex installed. 102db @ 1watt... egad!

Hey Orcatraz, do you have anything on YouTube with your band? I was searching for someone using an MII with a full band and came up with nothing.

Sorry but we don't have a Youtube presence... we should.

I got the Fizzy III. I was thinking about a II, Bedroom mostly. But I did somethig today. Put the master on 4, and went to an amp and lowered the volume via fuse, Seemed to help a tad. I really like the 3, and am still able to switch to a 2. I play mostly clean with a Gretsch 6120. Would you say I will learn to live with it? Get a 2? Or just go for a different amp altogether? and which amp? Thanks!

Go for the Mustang III if you're going to be gigging. Better speaker and more power.

Also: Effects loop, may be useful at some point. Included 2-button footswitch is handy, four-button switch (MS-4) would be better, but two button allows you to switch models easily.

LCD on the front panel of the Mustang is a godsend.

Not as frequently discussed problem with the MII: Some folks have an issue with the models spontaneously changing themselves, especially if the selector know is on the border of the "green-amber" or "amber-red" selection zones. Could actually be a bigger issue at a gig than a little digital noise.

I've had my Mustang for a month and have yet to be hear a trace of fizz. Don't know if I'm lucky, or it just hasnt' reared it's ugly head yet.

If I had a great guitar like that I wouldn't be messing around with modeling amps. For what you are doing I recommend you listen to a Fender Blues Jr. or a Vox AC-15. If you want to spend more money, listen to a Fender Deluxe Reverb.

Also, I've never heard one, but the solid state Fender 212R gets a lot of praise for its cleans. It's a 2x12 but costs about the same as a Mustang III. You'd have to see if the volume can get low enough for you and if you like the tone at that volume. People don't seem to like its distortion, but apparently it takes pedals very well.

If you are sitting in front of the MIII and already find the fizz distracting, get rid of it while you can or you will always regret it.

Another option is the new Mustangs that will probably be announced next week. But actual availability may take longer.
