I am interested in using the speakers in the Mustang IV as an output for a second amp.

I noticed that when you connect to the FX return only the master volume control is active. I am thus wondering if I can use an amp head for a different amp and plug it into the FX return.

Can someone give some guidance on this?

Also, do I need to make sure that the other amp has an output of a given impedance? If so, what is the correct impedance for these speakers.

Hi jcsuarez,

Thanks for your inquiry. You could use the Fender Mustang as a power section with a second amp as a pre section. The only way to do this with the Fender Mustang III-V amps would be to use a line level output (assuming one is available) from the other amp and connect it to the effects return on the Mustang amp in order to use the Mustang amp as a 'post' amplifier. Other uses are not recommended and could damage your Mustang amp. Please let me know if I can assist further.

Best Regards,

Hi Alan,

Thanks for your reply. I think I understand your reply but wanted to follow up with my particular application to make sure that I fully understand this.

I just built a 5e3 Deluxe Tweed Clone and I'd like to use the speakers in the Mustang IV as outputs. I'm doing this for several reasons: (1) I'd like to see what a different speaker sounds like, (2) I'd like to have more volume potential with the 2x12, and (3) the tube amp I built doesn't have a master volume and I'd like to achieve the high volume distortion in that amp with lower volumes using the master volume in the Mustang IV.

Now, the distortion in the 5e3 occurs mostly in the power tubes, so I'd like to get the signal through the power section and then feed it to the Mustang IV. But I'm guessing that this is not line level and it is probably much stronger. I'd appreciate your thoughts on this.

One option, however, would be to use a speaker load box with a line out to convert it to line level.

Thanks again!

Hi jcsuarez,

Yes, you can use a speaker load box to bring a line level signal into your Fender Mustang IV amp at the Effects return point. You will want to use a line out or headphone out from the speaker load box. Remember, the output has to be converted to line level coming from your other amp. Connecting a speaker output from another amp directly to the speakers on the Mustang IV is not recommended. Also, keep in mind that the Mustang IV is a stereo amp. So, depending on what what speaker load box you choose, you may want to consult with the manufacturer of that product to determine what connectors to use to bring the line level signal to the (left and right) effects return on the Mustang IV. I hope that helps.

Thanks again Alan.

To anyone else that might be interested in this idea, below are two solution that I found:

1- Direct Box with Dummy Load
Weber provides a kit and a schematic here:
http://taweber.powweb.com/store/kits_weber.htm#loadline

You can also get a DI box here (for example, I know there are many):
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdet ... er=248-672
and a separate dummy load here:
http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdet ... e=googleps

2- Attenuator. Again there are many, but I found this one appropriate for my needs/budget:
https://taweber.powweb.com/weber/lpld.htm

Both options give you a line level out that can be fed into the FX return of the Mustang IV.

Hi jcsuarez,

You are very welcome. Thanks for sharing the extra information. And for other members who are reading this, please be aware that you will have to use a line level output from the other amp to the Fender Mustang III-V amps effects returns to do this. Other output signals may damage the Mustang amps. Thanks.
