Hi all,

This is my first visit to this forum - it seems a very friendly place with a lot of helpful posts. I hope that you will allow this noob to post a question ...

I have been looking around for answers first, but I could not really find what I was looking for and I apologise if I have missed relevant info.

I recently bought a Mustang II and a Telecaster Deluxe (2 Humbuckers). I have been trying to find an acceptable setup but the combination seems to make a lot of noise.

The amp is almost silent if no cable is plugged in. The noise comes when the cable is plugged in (without the guitar). I have tried different cables, they seem to be all the same. If the cable is then plugged into the guitar, most of the noise can be taken away if I touch the plug, or the strings.

So far I have been trying different wall sockets - both with ground and with making a separate connection to the central heating system: this did not seem to make any difference.

Settings on the amp: low gain and volume seem to take away some noise but it is a bit silly if you have to stay at settings below 3, or?

Can you recommend settings for the amp, do I have a real problem or is it something I have to learn to live with? In the shop (same guitar, other Mustang II) I did not notice anything. Since I live far from the shop, it is not so easy just to go back ...

Your advice is much appreciated!

Hans

My MIII ( and my MII before it) is dead quiet when I turn it on and when I'm not playing, even with the volume cranked up - no hiss or any other noise.

If I plug in a cable not connected to the guitar, but let the cable just lie on the floor, there can be noise, but it goes away if I pick up the cable or hook up the guitar. This is typical behaviour and not unusual I would say.

My M2 and Blacktop Jaguar have exactly the behavior you describe. Since I usually touch the strings while playing, I don't worry too much about it
If you use a high gain amp model, like American 90s or Metal 2000, it helps quite a bit to turn up noise suppression in FUSE under "advanced amp".

Thanks for your replies! I am a genuine noob when it comes to electric guitars so I do not know what to expect and it is good to know that there is no serious problem. I will see what I can do with FUSE.

Would it help to change to a different length of cable, or go wireless?

Hi hansh,

It looks like you are getting some good advice here. Noise with different guitar/amp combinations can vary quite a bit depending on the guitar, the pick ups, the electronics, the amp and the amp's settings, Presets, etc.

In regard to a longer cable, you should be good up to at least 25 feet. As far as going wireless, that is a whole different ballgame. If you purchase a good wireless unit, it can work well. But you can run into some issues with interference and related issues depending on your location etc.

I would suggest going with a wired connection and double checking that the guitar is working as expected (all switches, controls, etc.) and double check the A/C outlets that you are connected to. Are there any dimmer switches on the circuit you are plugging into for example or anything else connected that may be interfering with your gear? There can be some different variables. I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can assist further.

Thanks Alan,

The basement I'm playing in comes with fluorescent tube lightning ... I'll play around with FUSE and presets first (the different standard presets come with distinctly different noise levels, I have noticed).

Hi hansh,

The lighting may be causing you some trouble in this area. An easy test would be to take the amp and guitar to a separate space and test there to compare. :)

Some of the Mustang 'factory' presets certainly are noisy, especially many of the higher gain ones, but the noise gate that you can find on the Advanced amp page in the Fuse software is very effective at suppressing that noise.

Just be aware that using the noise gate at the higher settings may also cost you some sustain.

Hi Guys,

The noise gate can be an effective tool when you are using a high gain Preset that is a bit noisy. But it is important to correct out any external noise issues (i.e. noisy lighting, dimmers, etc.) as a separate issue and get those items sorted out before moving onto the amp itself and thus being more confident that you are dealing with a behavior of a high gain Preset and not the dimmer causing noise on a circuit where you may happen to be plugged in.
