Hi I am new to the forums.

Recently I bought a Fender Mustang III amp to use for my guitar and Harmonica, My guitar works great but I am having lots of problems with my Harmonica setup.

I got myself a madcat shaker mic from USA and it works fine but when I connect it to the amp I get lots of feedback and the volume of the amp is only on 1.

What do I need to stop this feed back on my mic, any help would be of great use.

Kind Regards,
Tom.

Hi pottertea,

I will check with one of our design engineers and get back to you tomorrow with any suggestions I can get. From the looks of the product you are referring to, it should have excellent feedback rejection. I will check it out on our end. You may also want to check with the Shaker on this. Thanks.

Hi Tom!

I'd start by asking what patch you are using? Does it have compression turned on? And OD of some sort? If there is a compressor turned on, it is probably raising the gain of anything below threshold, which is awesome for a guitar, but not so awesome for an open mic.

Start with one of the bare bones patches that have no effects patched in, and no compression, and see what results you get.

Hi and thanks for your help.

I am new to this so I am not sure what patches I am using, I downloaded and installed Amplitude fender that seems to be working ok, also fender fuse I have done everything it says to set up my hardware but I just cannot get it to work, also I have downloaded and installed Liver 8.0.9 and cannot get that to work.

I have managed to update my firmware for my amp, but apart from that I don't know of any other patches I need to use, any help as to what ones I need to use and where I can find them would be of great use.

Also I contacted the people that sold me the madcat mic and I received this email

Dear Tom,
Thank you for your recent inquiry.

The microphone is not going to be your issue; pretty much, it lies within the type of cable you're using. I'd highly recommend using either a Monster Cable, or a Mogami Cable for the set up. This will take out any feedback you're receiving. If this is not the case, your amp may be having an issue, as well. I hope this email helps. Was there anything else I can do for you today?

Hi pottertea,

I have done a bit of checking, and below are some basic global tips for using your harp with your guitar amp. I think that the overall idea here is that the guitar will have much more tolerance regarding feedback than a mic. Also, you may have to create some custom Presets for your harp setup that may not work well for your guitar tone all at the same time. This is something to keep in mind. So, check this information out, and let me know if I can assist further.

Things to do to help stop feedback.

1. Point your amp away from you. Don't walk near the amp. Hold the mic behind you when you adjust the volume. If your amp has an open back, don't walk behind it.

2. Get a volume control for the mic. It helps control the feedback, combine this with a long cord and you have more than half solved the problem.

3. Turn the Bass up full and the treble all the way down. Common mythology has it that is the way Little Walter set his amp. The feedback comes mostly from the treble. It helps to keep the treble down on the more powerful amps. In low power amps, the tone controls also cut back on the volume. You need as much volume as you can get so turn up everything and then turn the volume back until it stops squealing.

Hey again! Well, first off, ignore the reply you got from Musicians Friend. They just want to sell you expensive cable. (Monster Cable is one of the very few things they get a spiff on) The cable is not causing the feedback. Guaranteed.

When I say "patches" on the amp, I mean "presets." (too much time spent in the synthesizer world, I guess). On the Mustang III, the basic amp models are up in the 90-99 range. For harp, I'd try out the 57 Champ model, since that was a popular harp amp. It should have no effects on it such as compression, OD, etc.

Keep the gain down to start with. You'll probably want to GRADUALLY bring the gain up to get the amount of "tube saturation" you want.

Mustang 3 with harmonica: I am having same problem, but didn't count on this amp really working anyway (so I am pleased). So far, I have found this: Preset 7, which is Johnny Marr Clean works. You can turn the volume down (with volume knob), then turn master up a bit so it isn't so touchy. Same with all the presets, or amp settings. #22 works also. The following amps work: 65 Twin reverb and Delux reverb. 57 Delux, 65 Princeton, and 59 Bassman. Again, you will have to turn the volume down so the master doesn't go from nothing to loud with feedback. How do you like your new mic otherwise? My green bullet is not working, so I have to play around with my fireball until I get it fixed and/or get new mic. Thinking about a Front and Center mic. We need to stay in touch so we can share settings with the Mustang that work. Blues for me.

+1000 on the cable. The chances of a monster cable fixing feedback is so close to nil it's laughable.

For instrument cables I get the cheapest cable I can find that is 100% shielded.

Tip #1: Don't EVER ~ Never Ever EVER ~ take Guitar Center employees' "advice" on ANYTHING related to playing Amplified Harp. EVER.
Tip #2: Repeat #1.
