I am very happy with my IV and I am sure I will keep it for a long time. I love it's look and the material that covers it but my one gripe is the cheap nasty plastic Fender badge on the front. It would have been so much nicer with a metal badge. I might try and find a old metal badge somewhere and stick it on myself then it will be perfect.

While we're on petty complaints:

What was Fender thinking when they decided to put all the controls, connections, display and buttons on the top?!?!?!

Doesn't Fender know ANYTHING about Rock n' Roll?!?!??!?

First rule of designing an amp for Rock n' Roll - NEVER put the controls and connections on the top!!!!!

That's because Rock n' Rollers have a rather HUGE tendancy to drink something called BEER, which they like to put on top on their amplifiers. This of course leads to a phenomenon called 'SPILLING YOUR BEER', which is no problem IF the connectors and controls are on the FRONT of the amp. However, in the case of the Mustangs, DESTROYS the amplifier.

Now all Mustang owners have to ask for a TABLE to put their beers on, which ineviditably leads to somebody's wife, girlfriend or Mother insisting that you use a doily. A DOILY!

There is NOTHING as emasculating and hence un-Rock n' Roll as HAVING to PUT your BEER on a DOILY!

Fender has orchestrated the demise of masculine Rock n' Roll and ushered in the era of girly-man Rock n' Roll! UGH!

Now, if I can figure out where my wife keeps the doilies, I can open another beer and get onto some guitar playing....

I agree fender should have never put the controls on the top, with my mustang I it is not too bad because of it's small size it is easier to see the top control knobs but with my mustang V it is also harder to see the LCD display and i cannot stack any other amp heads on top of it.

If fender ever comes out with a new mustang i hope they put the control panel on the front of the amp.

Yeah, I'll second putting all the knobs and jacks on the front ON THE MUSTANG V HEAD. For the combos, I'm fine with them being on top, actually.

I'll chime in with my $0.02 worth. I think on the combos, putting the controls makes perfect sense. They are SMALL, sit on the floor, and and the controls and screen are easily seen when you are standing in front of the amp.

If the controls were on the front, you'd have to kneel down in front of the amp to see anything, which would make it impossible to make any quick changes in the middle of a song.

I agree that they should be on the front of the head, though.

Not sure there is a 'right' answer to this !

If the amp is on the floor, and you are looking down on it, top mounted controls, and especially the LCD screen, make sense.

However, if you put the amp on any kind of stand that tilts the amp back - as many amp stands tend to do - the top-mounted controls, and especially the screen, become invisible.

I guess there is also an issue about how much detailed 'live' tweaking of the controls on these kinds of modelling amps people really want to do during a gig. For myself, the most I usually want to do is switch between the presets I have already set up, and the foot-switch will let me do that without needing to access the amp controls themselves.

I actually do a LOT of tweaking during songs. Everything from changing the amount of feedback on a delay, to changing a chorus sound. I grew up playing in bands in the 70s, and just got used to tweaking my sound during shows to fit with what else was going on - room wise, crowd wise, and even tempo wise (ever meet a rock drummer who could start a song at the same tempo twice? I haven't)

The idea of looking back at my amp and realizing that there is no way that I am going to gracefully change a chorus rate while playing a guitar is rather unsettling.

This is only marginally unrelated, but I wanted to say how I love how Fender actively monitors threads here and actually take feedback. So glad I joined the Fender family earlier this year.

What if the control panel had a tilt feature? THAT would certainly be a nice feature on the next generation.

If you have the EXP-1 you could control any of the parameters with it and have two set up, one on each mode of the pedal. I am working on using the vibro stompbox so I can control the rate like with a Leslie cabinet using the pedal.

The best design in my opinion would be to have a angled (slanted) front control panel,as previously mentioned when your mustang is tilted back on a stand or even if you use a wedge to angle it back it is harder to see your control settings,i have my mustang I on a stand that i made about 18" off the ground and i have it tilted back for better sound projection but with my mustang V it would be much worse if i tried to angle it back,i would not be able to see the LCD display at all.

Any new mustang III-V should have the slanted front control panel design.

Edit:To add a tilt feature for the mustang's control panel would only increase the cost for a new mustang in my opinion.
