Hi all.

Anyone tryed using a Guitar Rig Kontrol 4 or 5 into the input or FX line In on a Mustang amp?

I want to get the GR5 Kontrol pedalboard and have heard that it works well in the Tech21 PE60 and the Roland Cubes, as both are meant to play super cleans and work well with modeling sims as the final peice of the signal chain.

But where I already have the MIII and if I can save a few bucks by using what i have, that would be cool. I like my MIII, but it has its limitations and the GR5 could certainly make it far more flexable.

Thanks for any input.

Hi wwit,

You can certainly use in-line pedals with your Fender Mustang III. Of course you will be potentially stacking modeling which may bring undesired sonic results. Outside of that, you will want to watch your overall gain structure so that you do not overload the input section of the amp.

So, if you move forward with this pedal, I would suggest that you simply keep an eye on how much gain/signal you are adding to the input overall, and look at setting the amp up with a clean setting without Gain/effects when you are using the pedal's modeling and likewise turn off or select clean modeling with no Gain/effects on the pedal when using the amp's modeling. Please let us know if we can assist further.

What are the specific limitations you are addressing?

In my case, I didn't want to use the built-in tremolo, chorus, and tuner.

So I have a small Boss pedal board with Boss pedals:

Boss TR-2

Boss CE5

None of these pedals have caused me any problems, it sounds great.

None of those pedals you show, being 'modulation' type effects, seem likely to add significant gain into the signal chain, and will therefore work happily with the Mustang.

Problems are more likely to arise when trying to use overdrive/distortion pedals with a Mustang amp.

No-one is saying it can't be done, just that it needs more care in the setting up.

I use a mild overdrive pedal myself with a Mustang III, but I do need to be quite careful about the level/gain settings on both pedal and amp to avoid some very unpleasant distortion, and generally I use the pedal with the cleaner/lower gain amp models - a bit like putting an overdrive in front of the clean channel on a tube amp.

Have you spent any time with the built in effects on the M3. The stompbox effects are pretty darn good and then there are the more advanced rack mount type that give you lots of control over the effects. And you don't have to worry about levels.

I can understand why strings10927 uses those pedals; the built-in modulation effects are among the weakest on the amps in my view.

As I said above, happily those kinds of external modulation effects also work very well with many of the amp models, especially the cleaner ones.

Hey thanks all.

As far as the "limitations" I refered to, does have to do with the mix/match of built in effects. I understand that Fender can only do so much with an amp and keep to the low price point and Im good with that. Ive been very happy with my MIII. Also there are limitations with the high gain sims. The Fender amp sims are dead on and realy fun to play through with a Strat or Tele.

Im thinking that it should work fine with GR5. I drug out my old Line6 POD 2.0 that I havent used in at least ten years. Plugged into the front of the MIII. Set amp to Fender 65 Twin Reverb. 0'd the gain, set stock stack to 5. No FX. And it sounded awsome. Well awsome for a very dated POD anyway.
