Hey everyone!

I just tried the Mustang Floor at rehearsal tonight straight out of the box and it's a pretty impressive machine! However, I've been wondering if anyone has A/B'd the Mustang with a POD HD, and if so, what did you end up with and what influenced your decision. So far, the Fender is in the lead for ease of use and bang for the buck, yet I'm still having a little trouble deciding.

I'd appreciate any info any of you might be able to offer.

Thanks in advance!!

I can't answer your exact question, but I can tell you that I used to have an HD500 and now have a Mustang III. When I had the HD500, I played it though a cheap PA system at my house. It sounded OK. I had it for about 5 months. In that time all I played through was the HD500. Then one day, I played through my sons little 15watt vypyr and couldn't stop playing. I missed playing through an amp. It just had such a different feeling than playing through my PA system. So I decided I was going to look into other options as far as amplifying my HD500. I almost went with a Tech 21 Power Engine, but ended up trading in the HD500 for the Mustang III. I have not looked back since. Keeping in mind that I was playing through a PA system and not an amp with the HD500, the Mustang sounded miles better, and sounds huge, especially when using any of the 4x12 cab models. The presets on the Mustang were much more useable than what comes with the HD500 IMHO. Also the mustang is much simpler. I'm sure the HD500 has great tones in it. I know there are because I hear them in YouTube videos, but to me there are soooo many options it's easy to get lost. I spent hours and hours trying to find tones I liked but I just couldn't find what I was looking for. Once again, part of that could have been playing through the PA. With that in mind, the Mustang is so simple to find good tones in. Really really great tones if you are into clean, mid gain bluesey tones. I don't play metal, so I can speak much for that, but certainly all the clean, classic rock, bluesy tones you could want and easy to dial in. For simplicity alone, I would go with the Mustang Floor over the HD400....

Ditto to what GodinSession wrote. I also have a Mustang III and POD HD500. I love the Mustang because it just works! The HD500 is more work than it's worth, at least to me. YMMV...

I appreciate the input guys! I tried an HD500 for about a week and spent way more time trying to program the danged thing than playing music. The Fender is so much easier to navigate and sounds awesome immediately, which appeals to me 'cause I'm just an analog guy in a digital world trying to wrap his head around all this DSP stuff.

Went through the multi-effect-modler type pedals/boxes from Johnson A station on through a Zoom G7. Into my studio monitor system or into a clean tube amp. Never got what I was looking for it seem. Tended to get the Hi-Fi sound which is good for recording I guess, but not for live playing. And ALWAYS tweaking it seemed and that took time. Then got a SCXD which I really like. An amp with easy access to the the models and great sound. Then the Mustangs came out and went from a II to a III. Just so much easier to use and way better tones. I use FUSE at home to set up my patches. Only run about three. But even when I want to try something new it's no different from just plugging into a new amp and adjusting to taste.

Mustang is home use about half the time, and practice some live stuff. DRRI other half and most live stuff.

I haven't tried the Line6 HD, but I can give you a take on the Mustang III vs. the Line6 Sider IV amps, as I own both. (IMHO of course...)

Mustang III:
1) Much easier to use for customizing effects and tone. Whether using the knobs on the amp or Fender Fuse, it's much simpler than the Spider. Very intuitive. With the Spider I mainly stick with presets so I don't have to mess around with adjusments...
2) Much better tone for clean and blues. Very receptive to single coil PUPs for this type of tone. These tones seem to have more "depth" on the Mustang than the Spider, where these tones seem sterile.
3) Better diversity of good tones.

Spider IV:
1) For heavy distortion w/ humbucker, this is awesome. Very tight distortion with low background noise.
2) Excellent low end w/ distortion amp settings. Maybe it's the Celestion speaker but this has lots of low end.
3) Nice option for Shortboard foot controller to work in conjuction with amp. Easily scrolls through "banks" w/ 4 preset buttons per bank, and has a nice integrated wah pedal. I have the two button footswitch that came with the Mustang amp, but even with the optional four button footswtich, I think you can only have 3 presets at your disposal, and there's not wah pedal. Of course, the Mustang floor unit has the wah pedal, but I don't think the floor unit is intended to be used with the Mustang amp (duplication of modeling effort, I think).

Anyway, that's my 2 cents...
