Hi rogersc45@ahoo.com,

You can also connect one of the outputs from the Fender Mustang Floor to the guitar input on the Hot Rod Deluxe. But the output level from the Mustang Floor coming into the Hot Rod may be pretty hot. I would suggest that you turn the output level (rear panel of Mustang Floor) all the way down when you first connect the two. Then bring up the output until you have an appropriate level for the amp.

You will also want to consider whether or not you want to use the modeling on the Floor in addition to the Hot Rod. If you want, you can bypass the modeling on the Floor by pressing the Amp button on the unit. Please let me know if I can assist further.

Thanks..one more question..I modified some of the presets at home using headphones and got some great sounds I've been looking for..Once at practice with the HRD the presets didnt seem even close.. Would this be because of the stereo effect in the headphones or the modulation effects sound different in mono or what ?. If I got and ext cabinet would I get closer to the sound of the headphones. Have headphones just spoiled me for good ?

It's more about the differences in the way the headphones and the speakers reproduce the sounds - different frequencies, different tonalities. To really get the sounds set you way ou want, you should set them using the amp, rather than the phones.
I had the same experience using the regular Mustang II the first time I used it without the 'phones - had to do some tweaking to get the "real world" sounds that I had heard in the headphones.

Yeah, that seems to be the case..I have two Mackie 15TH powered speakers I'm thinking about trying..Don't you think I'd at least get a little closer to the headphone effect..I'm just concerned about gigging like that.

I've been using the Tech 21 Power Engine for many years. It's just a power amp and speaker in a cabinet and is designed for use with Guitar Preamps like the Mustang Floor. I've used it with the Line 6 POD Pro, the PODxt Pro and now with the BOSS GT-Pro. It works and sounds great. I'm planning to get a Mustang Floor this summer and will plug it into the Power Engine. Highly recommended.

The powered cabs are probably a better choice. Most of the recommendations I see for modeling gear like the Mustang Floor (POD HD500, AxeFX II) say you should use a full range/frequency response cabinet like the Mackie to get the most out of the modeling.

So I ordered two of these and they were delivered last week....

Image

They are sounding pretty good with the Mustang Floor for practice and setting up presets. Best $88.00 I have spent in awhile. After setting up the presets the sound I am getting in the headphones is pretty close to what I hear through the speakers, so I do not have to tweak to much to record. I have the two xlr outs hooked up to my Mackie 1620i and the two unbalanced outs going to the Altecs so I can mike them as well if I want to.

I also setup another pedal board with six pedals to use just with the Mustang Floor. It has an EH Soul Preacher, Digitech Screamin Blues and a Boss DS1 going straight into the input of the Mustang Floor. I also have an old DOD Ice Box chorus, Boss BF3 and a Beri 7 Band EQ for the effects loop of the Mustang Floor. It handles all of the pedals well and is shaping up to be a really nice DI for recording.

It sounds really good with my acoustic electrics and works ok with my Boss RC3 loop pedal when I hook it up to the Mustang Floor unbalanced outs and then run it straight to the Altecs from the outs on the Boss RC3.

I just purchased a Mustang Floor and it sounds great through the head set but when I hook up to an amplifier, I am using a line 6 spider IV 15 watt (8” speaker), does not sound the same. I do connect using the direct input (where I would usually plug my MP3 player, so that the effects and amp modeling Is bypassed. I have read many different ways to use the floor model including Powered PA speakers, and other amplifiers (using aux in). I don’t gig out anymore so this is just for practicing and playing along with MP3 player.

What is my best option small PA System, Powered PA Speakers, or one of the fender amplifiers like the Fender Champion 40, or Mustang III (keeping it small in inexpensive)? I just to hear the tones as if I had the head set on?

Thanks in advance...
Dante

dante,
If you go back and read through the thread, you'll find that most people get the best sound with powered PA speakers or powered guitar cabinets like the Tech 21 Power Engine.

If you're not gigging, get yourself a nice powered PA/monitor cabinet with a wattage that suits your needs.

If you're going to get a Tech21 PE60, I'd seriously suggest getting a MustangIIIv2 instead. Virtually identical weight and dimensions (A PE60 cover fits a MustangIII like it was made for it) but, using the efx return of the M3v2 will give you a unit with better projection, more power, less noise/hum, and a front/top-panel master volume (plugging into and adjusting the rear-panel eq and volume "buttons" on a PE60 can get tedious very quickly), and a 5-year warranty---not to mention a complete backup plan for you M-floor. Add an A/B box and and a Y--plug and you could have an insane amount of options (which, admittedly, I have yet to take advantage of because the freakin' power section, cab, and speaker of the M3v2 sounds so sweet with my floor modeler that I haven't had the need to add more models to my arsenal---yet). I have a PE60 (the remaining one of two) and an M3v2. The performance of the M3v2 as a power cabinet seriously kicks the PE60 around. The only advantage that the PE60 might have over the M3v2 is that it's all analog (I did have one of my PE60s develop a hum that was a minor fix but drove my tech crazy for a while).
I've been gigging live for the last 8 months exclusively with my M3 as a power cabinet and I love it. I did want the open-back, guitar-amp setup, not the powered PA cabinet (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Just something you might want to consider.

That was my original thought a Mustang 3 because it could be used as a backup, plus I tried out and liked it. I just thought it was sort of an overkill but the Tech 21 cost the same as the Mustang 3 so I think if the sound would not be changed by the amp then it seems like the better choice.

I just want to control the modeling and effects via the floor not the amp..
So if I connect to the effects return then I bypass the modeling and effects of the Mustang III amp?

thanks
Dante

Yes. The Master volume will also control the output of the power amp. Note that, even outdoors, I don't need to go above 4 on the master---it's loud. Note also that the M3 and the PE60 are open-back cabinets and they will spread the sound around. I recently did a MIDI-trio gig without a drummer and between 2-3 was all I needed to get the sound to feel live and full between the mains. With a live drummer, the power amp and cabinet starts to sound/feel really sweet at 3.5-4 and above but when I have the M3v2 hooked up to the computer the master is just about on. Still sounds good but you don't get the full impact/contribution of the speaker and the cab.

FRFR seems to be what you're after. You did say that you're not gigging and, if that were I, I'd pull out one of my powered monitors or powered speaker cabs---probably the easiest and least expensive way to monitor the sound at home.

P.S.: I wonder if anyone has tried their floor modeler into the efx return of an Acoustic G120-DSP amp. It's a 120W 2-12 SolidState combo amp getting a lot of good reviews and buzz and it sells for $200!

Right now its just for home use but who knows what the future may bring.. So I think the amp gives me more options.
