:( I'm sad, and wondering if I'm simply doing something wrong... Just unpacked my brand new Mustang IV out of the box. Plugged in my Epi LP with a brand new monster cable, turned on the amp, and buzzzzzzzzzzzz. There is a terrible fiz/buzz on preset 0, liquid solo. If I turn up the amp to a mere 3 on master it is actually fairly loud. I'm finding that ANY setting that has distortion has this buzz at varying levels. Has anyone else seen this? Is this common? I'm at a loss. I'm thinking I have to return it right now.

Anyone?

Unplug your guitar and see if the buzz is still there. If there's no sound, it's a ground loop issue with the wiring of your guitar...or the cable's got a short in it. If there IS sound, then it's an issue with the amp itself that needs to be corrected with Fender, probably with a replacement.

Thanks for the feedback! I just bought the guitar and the amp yesterday. I played the guitar a LOT at the store and didnt notice the issue on their floor model. I am beginning to suspect the cable based on that evidence and your comments, but I just don't know. If I unplug the cable from the guitar the noise stays. If I unplug the cable from the amp the noise goes away. If I plug A DIFFERENT cable into the amp (no guitar) the noise is back again, and that's why I'm left thinking it's the amp. I'm bringing the whole bundle back to the store I guess to see where the issue is so maybe it's irrelevant.

It sounds to me like the cable is picking up 60-cycle hum from nearby electronics. What kind of cable are you using and how long is it? You might want to invest in a GOOD instrument cable (like Monster, for example).

Check here: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/monster-cable-monster-rock-1-4-straight--angled-instrument-cable

These cables have been designed for the tiny guitar signal comming out AND to be shielded against EM interferance. Why would you pay for a new cable? If it's a good one, why wouldn't you? The cable should last as long as your guitar does. Think of it as an investment into your sound.

And so you know, even I get some hum from my guitar cables without the guitar, but usually only if I'm touching the exposed tip. If you touch the exposed tip, you're causing a ground loop with your body, allowing the loop itself to pick up EM interferance and the amp picks that up. Touching the sleeve of the jack doesn't do anything, as it's the ground anyway. The amp signal is picked up from the "hot" tip.

Again, if you get a really good cable and you still have hum (hold the cable off of the ground so the exposed jack is not touching anything and see if you still have tons of hum), then it's definitely the amp and you should have it checked out/replaced by Fender. But at least you'll have a really nice instrument cable when you get the replacement in. *nod* Hell, I'm thinking of getting this cable myself. They're having a sale currently on the 21' version. (it's cheaper than the 12-foot one!)

I actually have the 21' monster cable. I'm thinking of stopping by the shop anyway... they can tell me if it's normal or not and I'll go from there. It's nice to have the 90 degree swing at the end of it and having come from an electronics background I DO appreciate shielding.

Well I just thought of something else to check, although I don't think it will have much of any impact: check if the cable is backwards.

Backwards?! Yes, backwards. I didn't think it really mattered at all, and it still might not, but I know that certain cables are designed with a signal path going a certain way, usually by the writing on the cable itself. If I orient the cable so I can read the label, the left end will be at my guitar and the right end will be on the amp. I do the same with speaker cables, where the left is in the amp head and the right is in the speaker cabinet.

If you happen to have a UPS for your computer, try plugging the power in to that and see if the noise stays.

Hey maalekar,

Any change since Friday? What other kinds of electronics are near the amp?
