I just got my Mustang I yesterday and plugged in my new Black and Chrome Strat, turned on the amp with the master set on 2 and sure enough "Huston we have liftoff"!

After following the instructions from the CD I then tried using the Tuner to tune the guitar and couldn't get it to work.

I held down the TAP button for two seconds and both TAP and EXIT buttons were illuminated but that was the end of it. There was no sound as though the volume was off and the three tuning LED's were dead. The LED's on the left with the letters were dead as well. When I pressed the Exit button everything was back to normal and I could hear through the amp when I plucked a string.

Can you think of what I may be doing wrong or a setup instruction I missed?

Thanks for your help,

Harry

So, when the sound was muted and the LEDs were off, did you pluck a string to see what happens? BTW, it's supposed to mute the output when you engage the tuner.

Hah! That should've fixed it.

We'll, that's kinda poopie. If it's new, stop using it and take it back and get another one.

I got it from one of the large on line guitar companies so I'll give them a call to see if they know something to get it working. If not I'll return it and have them send me another one. Thanks for your help...

Hey Harry,

If the tuner is engaged you should definitely see something on the LED's when you pluck. Other than that everything is working? Perhaps you should try to update the firmware using Fender FUSE.

Hey Loren,

Thanks for the shout... I called the company where I purchased the amp thinking they may know something but they unfortunately didn't. I returned the one I had and should have a replacement on Monday.

Is it reasonable that the firmware should need and update or upgrade for a brand new amp? You know a lot more about this than I do I'm just surprised something like that would be necessary.

Again, thanks for the reply, this is a great forum!

Sure it is. We update the Mustang firmware pretty frequently so there's a good chance that yours doesn't have the latest version. Also a firmware update can sometimes fix issues that otherwise can't be explained.

Harry, I just thought of another question.

If a preset you're using has say, a Chorus effect enabled, do one of those tuning lights come on? Or, if you're adjusting the preset via the front panel, and move the Mod knob, do any of those Tuning/Mod lights come on? They should but if not, then I think you may have a faulty amp and a firmware update won't fix it.

Hi guys,

I didn't see any of the three tune LED's come on but I'm unsure of what I turned or didn't turn as I tried to make it work. I didn't try too many other things because the manual was very clear that you push the button down for 2 seconds and the tuner should work. But I read in the manual on how to reset the amp to the Fender basic settings wanting to make sure I didn't do something stupid which is always a distinct possibility!

Is going on line for an update, an easy thing to do and will I know what to do once I get there? I sent the manual back with the amp but is that process explained there?

Hey while I have you guys let me ask you another question... Do you know anything about the Gibson guitar course teaching beginning and intermediate guitar. I've read a lot of good things about it and was told to go with one training style and stay with it! So is the Gibson course a good one?

As always, thanks a bunch guys,

Harry

I was just trying to determine if the LEDs worked at all.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that it's well explained in the manual but it's not terribly difficult. Basically, you download the update and make sure you know where the downloaded file is being saved so you can get to it quickly as you may have to navigate to that file from within Fuse to run the update.

That's a tougher one to answer as everybody learns in their own particular way. Learning how to play chords is good but learning how to play single note melodies is hugely important. It makes you intimately familiar with the fret board and how frets and the strings relate to intervals. Here's a hint; You can play every note in a major scale (DO_RE_MI) within four frets and three strings. This means that with some exceptions, most melodies can be played using four frets and three strings.

Hey Orcatraz,

Are you saying that Gibson training only covers chords? I thought they'd cover all aspects of beginner and intermediate guitar playing!

Wow, I don't know exactly what that means but it sounds like you learn those and welcome to 80+% of all songs. Sign me up how do I learn to do that?

I wasn't really commenting on Gibson's guitar lessons specifically but chords are usually what most guitar lessons start with. The major scale I mentioned is the basis of everything in Western music. I would highly recommend that you find a pianist or keyboard player who can show you what a major scale sounds like - it should sound very familiar to you.

Hidey Ho Good Neighbors,

I got my new "Mustang I" amp and the tuner works so all should be well in amplifier land. Ah but not that fast there "amp man" oops "amp person"... I have an anomaly, a malfunction or otherwise strange aberration.

As you know there are three tuning lights, a red lights on the left and right showing to tune up or down and a green light to show the string is in tune. There are two strings (G string and the bottom E string) that will not give me a green light. No matter how I tune these strings the lights bounce between left and right red lights and will not give me a green, any green, any green at all. What's up with that?

Any ideas you have will be appreciated,

Harry

Have you tried a different guitar, Harry? Sometimes the harmonics of the guitar's body can interfere with tuners I find. Also, try tuning the problematic strings using its harmonics at the 5th or 12th fret and be sure that you're using the bridge pickup when tuning.
