Hi!

Is it possible to somwhow use the Mustang II with both a guitar and a microphone at the same time? I was thinking the AUX could be use somehow, but not quite sure what it would take to connect the mic to this...

Thanks!

Hi Madsen,
It would depend on how much output the mic has and that's kind of hard to know. Mostly I'd say it'll take a couple of adapters to experiment with this. If you're using a mic with an XLR connector, you may not get a whole lot of signal from that and may need to use a preamp and two adapters - not worth it. If the Mic has a 1/4" connector, usually permanently attached on the cable, you'll need a mono 1/4" female to stereo 1/8" male adapter.

Having said all that, I would not actually recommend doing this on a regular basis unless you are ridiculously careful. The Aux, Phones and USB ports on these amps are very fragile and using those adapters will put a lot of stress on the Aux connector and it won't take much of an accidental trip on the cable for it to break.

Thanks for the input. My current mic goes straight into the AUX, but the signal is really low compared to the guitar, so it is not really usable. Could I put in some kind of amp between the mic and Mustang?

Yes, you can use a mic preamp.

I tried it with an MII and some not cheap (~150$) Shure-Microphone. I used an 1/4" Mono to Stereo and a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter. And fixed it well with a lot of tape. It worked for an improvised small gig in a small bar with cajon and bongos as percussion and another low volume electric guitar. I turned Master-Vol on the Mustang to max and the guitar vol veeeery low.

Ok, that is a good idea and I will try to turn the guitar down. However, do you think it would be better to use a cheap mic preamp instead?

A mic preamp will also give you an adjustable level control for the mic. That way you can balance the volumes more easily.

Sorry to bring this up again.... But if I add a mixer with preamp, like the Behringer XENYX 802, between the mic and the aux of the MII, will I be able to make the mic (singing) as loud as the guitar? (the guitar is loud as hell, I need the mic to be that too )

I think your last wish is not possible. The Mustang can do a lot of things, but for to get your voice as loud as the guitar you ll need some extra device which is build for this purpose. Just a mic-preamp is not enough.

Not true, Frente. A mic preamp should be able to get the mic signal to be loud enough to overdrive that Aux input and thus can be as loud as the guitar. The Aux input is designed to receive a line level signal which is exactly what a mic preamp puts out.

Madsen, you can use either the mixer or the mic preamp but I wouldn't recommend using both. If the mic preamp's output indeed isn't hot enough, try the mixer which should definitely do the job.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will get the mixer. It is not much more expensive than a cheap preamp and seems much more versatile. It is not for anything professional, just fun so hopefully it will do

Maybe you are right, a least concerning the sheer loudness. But I really cannot imagine that it sounds loud AND nice. But I didn't verify it, so its just my believe. Maybe Madsen will tell us more after he did more experiences.

Well no, it definitely won't sound good. It'll probably sound very boxy... but it should work.

Ok, thanks. If the sound will be awful, I'll take another route. But if you guys do try it out, let me know :D

Madsen, if you want an idea of how it will sound, just plug a CD /iPod player into the Aux input. Listen to the sound and then ask yourself, if you would want the Mustang as a stereo system?
