Hi, new here. I thought I should post this as I've spent hours going down blind alleys with uninstalling drivers, trying extra cards, every setting ASIO4ALL has to fix this and it turned out to be something very simple.

I've got a Mustang I, quite happy with it so far, but first tried USB recording a couple of days ago. No matter what I tried, using either ASIO or MME in Ableton, or trying Audacity I recorded a terrible crackling signal. Using other sources, including direct ASIO through my soundcard and line in was fine. Recording over USB with all other sound cards uninstalled was still terrible. Eventually I tried a different USB port - instant success. My Mustang was plugged into my monitor which seems to act as a hub (despite only providing one port), I changed it over to a proper USB 2.0 hub and it's fine now (there's a note in Fender support about it being best plugged directly into the computer).

Obvious once you know what to look for, hope this helps someone else. What really took me up a blind alley was that the original setup was working fine in linux so I'd assumed there wasn't a hardware problem - thinking of writing a blog post about the Jack setup for that later.

Certainly sounds like interference from the monitor was the problem.

Some audio interfaces will tolerate being connected through (usually powered) external USB hubs, but for me it always seems safer to go direct into a USB port on the computer itself if you have a spare one - not always easy these days with so many USB devices hooked up at once !

Your reply got me thinking, it seemed unlikely it would be analogue interference from the monitor (since USB is digital transport it wouldn't be affected that way, also the setup worked in Linux). So I tried a few other things.

My computer only has one USB controller (onboard on the motherboard, 6 ports). With all other USB devices except the mouse unplugged and the amplifier plugged straight into the computer the problem still happened. I tried updating the motherboard chipset drivers (though this doesn't include a replacement USB driver) in case that made any difference and at one point had it working with the amp plugged into the motherboard port (this is going through different restart cycles), then with everything plugged in and restarting the computer the problem returned. Going through the USB hub continues to work, so I suspect it's something to do with drivers and possibly my chipset or interactions with other devices or enumeration order.

Motherboard is an Asus M2NPV-MX, nForce4 430 chipset, again working okay for me, but might help someone else. Looking at the distorted waveforms in audacity it looks like the signal inverts at 2ms intervals for whatever reason.

Weird, anyway I'm going to stop worrying about it and get back to thrashing blindly at strings.

Hey imalone,

So you're currently unable to record when connected directly to the computer?

Some tip when USB recording:

1 - Ableton sees the ASIO as a single source, so disable all but one input (the amp!) on the ASIO, or you will record a mix of the amp with your sound card (probably the PC mic if you use skype, so unplugged guitar and ambient)

2 - if you use a notebook unplug the power supply and use the battery to avoid audio interference (common issue on any recording system).

2a - A notebook may be better at recording... (speaking about noise)

3 - Set Amp Model volume Low or it will distort especially on distort/high gain models

4 - close anyapp that may use audio (E: firefox with youtube page....)

5 - Leave Ableton the necessary cpu power, close any app that is not needed for the task, recording and multitasking are not best friends

? - To my taste a cut in the 60hz frequency gives you a much cleaner sound from the Mustang USB source

I have an issue with Abelton 8lite and the Mustang Floor unit.
I have USB directly to usb hub on my laptop. I have tried tree usb ports and same problem. I have asio4all installed. I can hear the sample drum loops and instruments from Abelton through my 1/8 jack output on my laptop. The program uses realtek drivers for that jack.
When I boot up the FLOOR the ASIOdriver opens, so I know it see's the Mustang.
I arm an audio track but.............nothing.
It isn't seeing the signal from the floor unit or I have something setup incorrectly.
Any one?

Is there a setting on the floor that tells it to use USB out? if so, mine doesnt have that.

Hey Chips,

It sounds like you just have to disable the inputs for the Realtek card in the ASIO control. It's important that the Mustang has the only active inputs. All other inputs on all other devices will have to be disabled. You may be better off giving us a call if you can't get it figured out.

I may call in and have you guys walk me through it. I know every computer is set up differently yet close to the same. I think I tried to disable the realtek drivers in the setup but it still had issues. So a call in to you will help me. I used the Mustang Floor at church live yesterday for Easter. I downloaded the presets on Friday night from the Fuse website. I used Beauty Clean for the opening song and then used 65 twin with reverb delay and chorus for the rest of the music we did. I used a little crunch on em and people liked it it think.

Which 12 string preset works best for direct PA use? Anybody actually try one live?

Hi, sorry to be so late in replying, haven't been back here in a while. No, I'm able to record. Actually I use Linux most of the time (and Plug to control the amp), but, as described, Windows works for recording through the hub. I did have it working direct into the computer at one point, but that was quite elusive and I think the may be some timing or priority issue with the motherboard chipset. Mainly posted this here in case it helped anyone else with the same problem.

I don't know if the presets on the Floor are the same, but I do know the USB gain set in the Mustang I is often very low, you might try adjusting that through Fuse or however it's controlled through the Mustang Floor's interface.

Most of your other points I'd agree with, especially 4 and 5 for ASIO, but I see no reason this should make a difference for the USB recording. Don't know the internals of the Mustang, but it probably doesn't even get converted back to analogue after modelling, even if it does the A/D would be in the Mustang. When recording from a line-out I'd normally use a ground loop isolator (not the highest fidelity solution, but definitely cuts out ground loop and PSU noise).
